Hey all,

I have a hs4 carby im trying to clean up to run on my moke engine.

At the moment the jet tube is stuck hard in the adjuster thingy. So there is no movement of the jet when you actuate the accelerator mechanism.

So question 1 is how to i unstick it or remove it.

And question 2, what size is the big nut on the top of the adjuster thing? Non of my spanners are the right size

Are you sure you are looking at the right mechanism? I thought the jet only moved downwards when the choke is actuated for cold starts.

When you actuate the throttle, the butterfly opens and the vacuum from the engine opens the piston and causes it to rise to a thinner part of the needle to let more fuel into the engine.

Is the choke mechanism still attached to the jet / linkage? I'd suggest spraying some penetrating fluid on it and letting it sit. The few that I have done have always been free and never stuck solid - just make sure you are getting the mechanism the right way around for actuation.

yeah sorry.. must be the choke mechanism....

but the problem remains the same, the jet doesn't move at all, its jammed in there tight.

Are you trying to save the jet or are you just trying to get it apart to rebuild everything?

The nut you speak of should be 11/16" or maybe an 18mm will get you by in a pinch if you aren't a purist who must use af tools on af bolts.

I just need the carby working, so if i need to replace the jet that is fine.

The Jet Locking Nut it turns out is 7/16 BSW, luckily I had some BSW spanners from my grandpa's old workshop in my collection, so thats a win.

what would the normal process be for removing the jet?

Remove the suction chamber with the piston and needle. Disconnect the fuel line from the underside of the float bowl and then unscrew the jet retaining nut. The jet will then drop down out of the carb at that point, but in your case you will need to apply some pressure. There's actually two nuts. The first nut screws into the next. The jet adjustment nut is to adjust the jet height to tune the mixture, this screws directly into the second. Remove this second nut and you have the brass jet bearing (bushing). If you take this out, it will need to be cleaned and the reason for jamming up determined.

I left the carby overnight last night with a puddle of innox on the jet tube/adjuster area,

I got the jet out today buy winding the adjuster all the way out till it touched the base of the jet, then gave it another rotation and it moved the jet a little,

after that i wound the adjust all the way back in, then with the fuel line disconnected i was able to wiggle/twist the jet out.

cleaned everything up and put it back together, and everything looks like it will work.

I did try to get the jet bearing out to clean it, but that second nut wouldn't budge at all, tried a spanner and a socket with the carby clamped the the desk and it was no good.

hopefully it works as is for now, but if not i guess ill have to try again and get even rougher
