I've had a search but not found much ![]() From time to time my speedo "chirps" or "squeals". Is this from the odometer or the drive to the speedo, and more importantly, what is the fix ![]() |

Sounds like the main drive cable and bearing area...how long has it been since you lubed the cable? |

I bought a new speedo cable a while ago that was dry as the proverbial inside. Had not a skerrick of lube. Never assume these things are lubricated and ready to fit. And if you run them dry, yes they can squeak. |

Haven't checked the cable yet but what sort of lube should I put on it ? |

A smear of molygrease, leave the top 100mm dry so it doesn't get into the speedo. |

The Doc offers good advice as always. There are however a number of items in the speedo itself thatcan go dry over time. Treat the speedo and cable to a service much the same as you would change the oil from time to time |

Phil 850 wrote: 9YaTaH and minjicar, what are the parts that need lubricating ? I've never pulled a speedo apart before ! Don't start now! ![]() The cable should be lubricated with a thin film of Molybdenum Disulphide grease for most of its length...just leave a little each end un-lubed to prevent pumping grease into the speedo head (for example) The rotating magnet assembly bushing within the speedo, AFAIR, has no lubrication(?)... A small amount of Molybdenum Disulphide on the shaft for the Odometer pawl assembly... Most common mistakes home mechs make is opening a Speedo on their workbench with all the magnetic swarf lying around instead of on newspaper spread across the kitchen table!!! ![]() |

Phil If the sqeeking is coming from inside then there will be some wear that grease alone won't fix. If you are going to lubricate the mainshaft you will need to remove and replace two rivets to do so. Have fun |

If the squeaking is the rotating magnet fouling the drag cup then the speedo needs major surgery.. |

Smiths is the real prince of darkness not Lucas ![]() In fairness, a speedo being showered in dust, oil etc is on a hiding to nothing in a mini. |
