Hi,
Does anyone know what car a Lucas 29D distributor stamped AYR0340 or AYR0370 would be from?
Sorry I'm not exactly sure of the number and don't have access to it at present.
Cheers
Rod

The 29d was used on a few cars other than bmc and Leyland cars

Off my sealed set of nos target L19 points yes target sold car parts once apon a time I remember it well

I brought my first set of spanners and sockets off them in the early 90s and still have some wheel bearing grease with a target price sticker on the castrol container after cleaning out my grandfathers garage when he went in a nursing home

try going in there today for car parts and tools the service staff will look dum founded if you can find one

L19 suits Lucas systems
Holden 6cyl 1965-74
Torana 6cyl 1969-75
Datsun 4cyl 1968-75
Ford escort 1970-74
Hillman 4cyl 1962-73
Jaguar all 6cyl
BMC mini/1800/1956-75
Land rover 1971-77
Toyota corona/crown 1969-75

I don't think all the cars listed there had the 29d but it gives you a idea what cars used the same points used in a 29d

Rod,

AYR is not a typical BMC part number prefix so you'll need to have a closer look to determine the exact stamping of the complete part number. AYG is a typical prefix for the Mini range. In any case it looks like it was used on a vehicle in the BMC range.

The Lucas part number (8 numerics and one alpha) and date should also be stamped on the body. Does it have vacuum advance?

If you post those details I should be able to assist.

Picture below of the 29D4 on my MK II S.

Cheers,
Doug

There was an AYH0580 629411039A fitted to the Morris 1500. Mechanical advance only.

The distributor is a few hundred kms away but I'll see if I can get some more info. It did not have a vacuum advance and I don't recall seeing a date stamp on it.
Thanks
Rod

I think the late cooper s run a 29d with out a vacuum advanced so I've been told

If you need a cap for it mini kingdom online is probably the only place in Australia who have them while stocks last id say

John still had stock of them on the shelf at the open day show and shine the other week

No Cooper S or GT had vac advance.

Can I ask a question, maybe it's dumb. Why do Cooper S and GT's run without a vacuum advance.

Race engines don't need the vacuum advance because they are operating at either wide open throttle or no throttle. The advantages to vacuum advance is better economy at light loads.

So why don't road going S and GT need them. My engine is only a 1098 with twin SU's but no spot for a vac hose anyway. It still went pretty good.

They put the Mechanical only dissys on the performance engines back in the day.
There must have been a good reason to do it but using a vac advance dissy will be better for the engine. They will run cooler and more economically. You get the optimum spark at varying loads.
I guess there is less to go wrong with a Mechanical only and a lot of the time your at full load.

Vacuum advance is a fuel economy device, nothing more. Without it the top dizzy plate is fixed, so there is less spark scatter. One thing less to go wrong and cause damage. It is safer not to have it on a car that may likely be raced, the Cooper S was homologated with none for this reason.
Back in the 60s most sporty European cars had no vac advance- Alfas, Fiat/Lancia twincams, etc.

I'm glad they made a batch. I have some dusty old Bosch and Lucas 29D caps here. I was thinking I was going to have to clean them up and try to use them!

Those who strive for originality will know the Bosch caps are brown whilst the original Lucas ones are black. I wonder if anyone has bothered to paint a Bosch one? MKO seem to have plenty in stock.
