Where does the horn attach on an early '66 S?
I know that it doesn't matter where it fits, you can't hear it...
There are matching sets of holes on the subframe on LHS (like mini K) as well as in centre (no oil cooler).
Could it fit on the reinforcing gusset near the regular?

Should be attached by an L bracket and 2 bolts to the bonnet slam panel. They were moved there to make more room for the booster.

Or is it on a l bracket that bolts to front subframe underneath the oil filter

The picture in the sales brochure (not always correct, I know) shows it on the slam panel.

Who knows? 1965 cars 535 and 570 have their horns on the slam panel. Looking at my photo database 75% of Cooper S's have them there. Who knows how many cars have had a new slam panel put on. The replacement panels don't have the 2 holes. These are the 2 road test cars from Aug 65 and Jan 66. viewtopic.php?f=32&t=78059 viewtopic.php?f=32&t=73877

sorry , not horn related, but in the sales brochure i bet the mini got bogged in the sand
you don`t see any wheel tracks leading to or from the car on the beach,,, almost bet it was carried there :-)

Probably not relevant but on my 1970 Mini K horn was bolted to subframe next to oil filter (Davem).

Thanks for your replies. This much I do know (I think):
1. The original horn for the early '66 came with a flat bracket bolted to it, so it has to stick out somewhere into an open space - as per Goldbrocade.
2. Mini K were under oil filter on front subframe on an 'L' shaped bracket. They even used wiring extensions to reach down there.
3. Mk2 Ss had them on an 'L' bracket to the close panel
4. Winabbey's brochure photo is a '67 S, so may have been relocated to allow for oil cooler.

These are on L brackets just like the 1967 brochure.

The brochure may be dated 1967 but the engine bay pic is of the first type 65/66 S.
It show the metal pipe to the small vertical oil cooler and the first type round starter solenoid with the rubber cover over the starter solenoid push button.
It also doesn't show the master cylinders with the plastic filler extensions which my first S, car 1090, had.
The horn in the pic seems to be mounted on an L shaped bracket adjacent to the 2 small studs on the grille top panel.

EDIT: On further inspection of the pic it doesn't have a PCV system and has a breather hose from the valve cover to the air cleaner which seems to be the 997/998 type. S engines with PCV had a different air cleaner housing with the unused valve cover tube in a location further to the LH side.
The engine is also painted dark green rather than the light metallic green in the wheels mag pic.
Perhaps the brochure pic is of a pre production model???

The vertical oil cooler would rub on the horn if it was placed in the area where the deluxe had them.

I believe the horn was moved from the gusset area because of the hydro hose. The 850 had them there.

So the other logical place would be somewhere between the brake servo and the vertical slam panel brace. There were 2 x 10-32 studs on the slam panel sticking out to the rear but I don't believe they were used because of size and weight issues. I do have photos of horns tucked away in front of the servo but can't confirm how they are attached.

The guys on here with early 66 cars are justminis, aaron, bubbacluby, ianscampbell. Hopefully they can advise on what they have.

The White car in the brochure is definately a one off pre production model. Probably hand built. The same car is on the cover of wheels and on a early road test and they state it is a prototype. The actual car has no s on the bonnet either. BMC obviously used it for the photos in the brochure.

For what it's worth, my September 1966 S hadn't been altered before I bought it in 1988 & the horn is indeed still attached to the right side of the slam panel as per the sales brochure of the same era.
