I went out to Jacks one day and didnt have a key for my doors. Jack had a keyboard, got a bunch from it and tried a few random ones and about the 5th one I got it.

My son who is a locksmith told me when he was doing some work for me on a number of boot locks, that there were only 99 different combinations used across the mini range. This information came from his computer that is used to program the key cutting machine that will cut keys to virtually any vehicle that was sold in Australia in numbers and goes back many decades.

We found numbers stamped on the cylinder on the door locks and some on the square drive of the boot locks, when put into the computer the keys were cut spot on. I am beginning to believe him as I have found that since getting the boot locks working I now have found 1 door lock (with no key) for each of the boots locks that are keyed the same. The boot and door locks are not from the same vehicle as they have been sourced from where ever they were available. The two cars I have came with neither door nor boot locks.

I'd reckon about 90% of those keys would open my worn out key barrels anyway!

Not that the central dash ignition switch is hard to get the wires off anyway...

MKO and others sell key blanks. I think MKO also has a key cutter that will cut from a sample, not the computerised cutter mentioned above.

Keys for classics can decode your key and give you its number from a good photo as well as cut keys to a code. Had this done for 2 of my GT's - one which had the number on an original key and one which did not have a number and was pretty worn. Both keys work perfectly.

In my previous job I had a small master key to open filing cabinets, compactus and other assorted locks with similar keys. Was very handy, saved a whole bunch of keys. Then I found by accident it would fit all the locks on my previous Aussie CooperS, including the petrol cap. It got worse - it also opened the mailbox here at home (and a neighbour's but don't ask how I know). The magic key.

All said, if you need a key to break in or steal a roundnose mini, you're working too hard. Probably one of the easiest cars you open/start without a key
