Hi all,

in preparation on putting in my donor 1098cc engine into my moke, i have pulled the diff to replace the crown and pinion to a more suitable set.
looking inside the spider housing i noticed a bit of play and decided to go further in and inspect.

i assume as these diffs are small they must wear pins and shims out fast, but at what point of casing wear should the whole unit be replaced?

after cleaning and looking over the spiders, i can see they were not running true for a long time,
i am at the point of weighing up options on where to go with this entire engine, Scrap/Replace Or Rebuild.
i can only imagine how the rest of the gearbox is looking, engine was just a spare that was pulled from a clubman but has been sat for at least 12 years

That is pretty bad, I would find another diff centre.
Plenty about, PM me if you can't find one local.

I had the same problem when rebuilding my diff, and looked through many diff housings to find one that wasn't worn...

The later (A+) diff housings have locating tabs on the thrust washers so that the spider gears and washers get worn, and the housing does not.

Used ones are listed here, they might be a better option?

If you want to avoid this wear in the future, it is possible to fit the A+ tagged washers to the early housing with a little judicious filing or grinding.
