we used to have a "coil reserve tester" it was magic, hook it up & wind the dial up to say 50% , then hit the button & if the engine stumbled the coil was stuffed (or not very good at least) best i ever found was %70 & was from the dirty-est crappy-est gungy-est old sh!tty looking 850 you`d ever seen  i ran that coil in my race car for about 12 years solid
