Can anyone tell me why you would have a 3/69 Mk1 with a Mk2 body ? Also, what is the difference between the two ? Came across some very interesting information, that's got me baffled. Thanks for your help. Cheers Brendan |

Most of 69 production was the `MK2' body, from what I have seen- it depends though on your definition... I call it when the wipers changed to LH park, with recessed shaft thingys. Happened in 1968, sometime.. ![]() As for Cooper S there was so-called Mk1 and MK1-1/2, and MK2 but the factory never called them that. From a global perspective, all out Minis are MK1 (external hinges, small rear window). |

I have a few people helping me out researching my car body numbers. They sent me a message stating my car number is a 3/69 Mk1 with a MK2 body. They haven't seen the car and I haven't as yet been able to contact them. The suspense is getting to me and I was wondering if anyone knew why an ID Mk1 would have an MK2 body ? They are only going off past mini records. ![]() |

Someone once told me a lot of left over Mk1 parts went into early Mk2's but why would it still be ID as a MK1 if that was the case. ![]() |

Not long after yours was built, they stopped fitting BMC body ID plates. Cars built in mid 69 had no plates. VIN plates came in at end of `69. My 3/70 car has that. |

Sounds too me like you may have a Mark 1 1/2 as the doc mentioned. They have some of the Mk2 bits but things like the front badge being the older one for an example. I hope its as simple as that for you as your car (going by your post about the engine numbers) is having an identity crisis. I hope its not a bitsa for your sake. Unit |

Still I could probably get around the purchase price if I pulled it apart. They have some of the Mk2 bits but things like the front badge being the older one for an example. ![]() Don't confuse build date with first registration date. Does your car have the ID plate fixed to the firewall behind the clutch master cylinder? If so it's a MK 1 or 1.5. There is no way of establishing an exact build date prior to the end of 69 when ADR plates were introduced. The later type wiper panel was introduced in early/mid 68 and was used on late Mini Deluxe and MK1 Cooper 'S' cars, the so called Mk1.5 cars, Like mine, and continued through to the end of production in 78. The interior trim is identical on Mini Deluxe and MK1 Cooper 'S' cars (apart from floor covering) and there are 2 types. The 2nd type was introduced at the same time as the wiper panel change. The first type was the same as 997/998 Cooper cars and was used in the Mini Deluxe and Cooper 'S' cars prior to early/mid 68. Mini K and MK2 Cooper 'S' cars use the same trim but it is different to the 2nd type Mini Deluxe- MK1 'S' trim in both style and material. I don't believe there were any MK 1 Cooper 'S' cars built in 69 as you couldn't buy one in your preferred colour until May when the MK 2 went on sale. Any MK 1 cars bought in early 69 would have been built in 68 and you had to take whatever colour was in stock at the time. I bought mine in Jan 69 and the colour choice was very limited. Don't know if it helps but that's what I remember from 69. Others may disagree. Regards RonR |

![]() Hi Kevin, It helps to have owned from new an early and late MK1 'S' as well as a used MK2 and a Clubman GT. Apart from Minis it seems I have KRAFT disease for most other things, according to my wife. Maybe it's just domestic oldtimers disease? They say you only remember the things you really like. Thanks mate, I'm greatful for the information even though it confuses the issue more. I' ll post whatever information I get, when I get in contact with the person helping me research my car. I talked to Graham ( Graham in Aust ) as some people suggested and he thought the numbers I gave him were consistant with a build date of 3/ 69. I'd really be interested in any comments you have when I find out more. ![]() Cheers Brendan |
