I run a RC40 twin box side exit.
Quiet on the road but does have a throb at idle. It's on a 1275 with RE266SS cam.

I have a single box Lukey L-131 with those extractors. Has a real bark on the 1310 when you put your foot in, but don't find it 'droney' on the highway or anything.

Edit: I also had a maniflow side exit at one stage. It also sounded nice. Wasn't quite as loud though.

My Cooper S had a single Lukey S box with Brownrigg extractors. Together with a 45 Weber, sc/cr box and four blade metal fan it made a noise to die for, far more scintillating than any V8 and upset the neighbours no end. They claimed they could hear it coming several blocks away!

Hi slide - interesting, I have a straight through stainless steel box (apparently the same as a lukey?) that I will get mounted on a 2 1/4" just as a single box. But if yours was that loud I'm thinking I might have to add a resonator/hot dog to it as well to get it to mellow down. I want a good sound but ideally I wouldn't generate too much attention!

Ah bugger it, I'll mount the single box and see if I pass a blue slip and see if I like the sound. I can always add the resonator later :D

I often used to get done by the cops for being too loud around Adelaide in the 1970s, but never in Melbourne for some reason. There's no annual inspections or blue slips here or Vic and never has been. They'd defect the car, Id take it home stuff chicken wire up the exhaust, take it back to the cop shop, they'd rev it a couple of times and it sounded ok. This probably happened once or twice a year I guess. I've got a twin box RC40 on the van which is alright, but not really the same deal when it comes to getting the adrenilin going!
