| Post subject: | Electricals parts stuffed- battery connected up wrong |
Last night in a rush and being pitch dark, I connected up the just charged battery to my clubman the wrong way. After walking off for about 5 mins and coming back to the car to drive off I noticed smoke coming from the bonnet. I checked the battery and yeah the terminals were connected wrong, I changed the connections, tried to give it a kick over, the starter motor would turn then make a strange noise. Ok my question is how many parts would have have possibly burned out, I mean a fair whack of smoke was coming from the alternator/distributor area. Which parts should I get first to fix my blunder? This car was getting driven every day to work so the quicker I get it fixed the better. Thanks in advance |

Sorry to hear......I think a few people have done that in their time. You will have to check your wiring...as I feel you may have had a meltdown. That's probably a job for an auto leccy I think. |

oh dear, i hope you can still get a genuine jar of it on ebay, cos' that generic smoke is crap, you only want lucas smoke!

Sympathies Miggy Take your alternator straight down to an auto lekky & have him test it, but expect to buy a new one. Search posts for alternators on this site - there are alternatives. Buy & fit a new condenser. Check that the points aren't stuffed. Then check for burnt wires. They normally burn out just inside the terminal lugs at the ends so a gentle tug on the suspect wires will confirm they are still intact. Coil should??? be OK. Check all fuses. You're lucky that minis don't have much in the way of electronics

Thanks. yep reckon ill passby a mini place on way home and grab the alternator and condenser at minimum and take it from there, although the auto electrician might have to come into it sometime. Got new points lying round so good time to fit. Fingers crossed the wiring isn't too knackered. makes my mucking round charging the stuffed battery instead of spending $50 on a new one false economy oh well lesson learned i guess, just topped off a crappy day. I did exactly the same thing, thoug hI didn't have it connected for 5 mins. I think you are lucky your car isn't burnt to a crisp if you left it for 5 mins. Dude, your wiring is definately stuffed. When it happened to me: * Starter solenoid = stuffed * Alternator = stuffed * Starter motor = stuffed, but it still worked, though it was causing other problems (such as chewing through 5 new starter solenoids, and not starting very well) * Fuses = all blown (thank god I had one on on my sound system, otherwise that would have been stuffed too) * AND I completely replaced the front-end wiring loom with a new one, and I suggest you do the same, otherwise it will cause endless problems for you in the long run. Cross fingers your coil and dissy are fine. Luckily for me mine were. It sucks BIG TIME. Not envious of you one single bit. |

I did a similar thing too. Burnt all my bloody wires up BUT didnt destroy anything other than the solenoid thing which I replaced with a nice new boshe thing. But ask Gaf... my wiring is up sheet creek now... Get yourself to an auto electrician..!!!
