Post subject:  Battery cable information required

I am restoring my 1966 Mini Deluxe and need to replace the battery cable from the boot to the engine bay. I will be running the original generator system. I am pretty rusty when it comes to electrical work. Does anyone know what amperage cable I need to buy. I have seen the stuff in Supercheap but it is smaller diameter but is rated as 125 amps, but it just looks a bit light on compared with the original.

Cheers.

Measure the diameter of the old one's copper conductor, then go to an industrial welder supply shop and buy welding cable the same cross section. 35mm2?
300A approx is what you want.

I bought Jaycar 35mm2 (2G) and it's rated to 160A. $16.95 per metre (by the way that's rated at 160A constant)

Jaycar also sell these crimpers for $49 that work really well

I put a 250A fusible link in there in case there is a short, but I have yet to see how it handles the current spikes of the starter motor.

Edit: and the stuff you're talking about OP is 4G which I agree is a bit light for the application for my liking

Same as Doc. My ECU didn't like the voltage drop with the old cable. Went to Mig Earth wire, solved the problem.

Sorry to say but those Zip ties will not last long holding the cable up with the heat from the exhaust. You need some proper cable clamps.

why didn't you just buy black battery cable from an Auto Electrician?

Hi Convertible Mini. The black metal tabs are holding the cable up, the zip ties were just added sag protection. But I'll grab some cable clamps if it'll be a bit more secure, cheers for the heads up.
