I was searching for what oil should be used in an SU and there were a few answers that popped up. One site however said ignore any other advice, you should run only SAE20W oil in SUs. Is tat what people here are using?

Penrite make some SU-specific oil I see (strangely enough they have both an "SU Damper Oil and an "SU Dashpot Oil") and I guess I could order that.

I popped into Supercheap to see if they had anything but they don't. I have 20W motorcycle fork oil in my shed already, could I use that?

Fork oil is fine.
I use ATF just because it is in the cupboard.

Go for the forking oil.

My local shop ordered in the Penrite stuff for me. Probably a bit expensive for how small the bottle is, but you don't use very much at all...

(Note they have the ISO listed incorrectly on this website though)

Will find that fork oil tomorrow and if I can't find it I'll order this stuff online or through local parts shop.

Both Penrite Dashpot and Damper oil are available on the shelf in store at Minis Plus.
I'll try to gety them up on the online store in the next few days, in the meanwhile if any one wants it shipped just give us a call.

SU oil is just straight SAE 30.

I find ordinary engine oil (20W50) or some such will work fine.

Hi Ian, Penrite list the Dashpot oil as ISO 15 and the Damper oil as ISO 68



And using the conversion chart



That puts the Dashpot oil at 5 W (or lighter) and the Damper oil at 20 W. The Damper oil is the right one for us.
I think the 20W50 would work well too then as you say, by the look of it.


If I can't find the 20W fork oil or motor oil in my shed, I'll definitely give you a call!

20W50 solved my stumbling on acceleration troubles.....was using lighter oils previously.....

I had twin HS4s on Barney's 1293 and it was stumbling on initial acceleration, this was in summer. Needles were #6.
The A/F meter showed it going too rich there, not lean. Graham Russell suggested take the dampers OUT. I did, and it fixed it.
From then on, I ran ATF in winter and nil in summer. YMMV...

The su damper oil 68 some hydraulic oils are 68 eg hyd 68 maybe the same stuff

Makes sense about the 20w50 really as it will be 50 weight when it is cool and it won't heat up nearly as much as if in the engine.
