Hi all where should engine breathers be on 1100s 1275 engines? Also have just put engine back into car and cannot get gears. Any suggestions?

1100S had a breather can on the flywheel housing, it went to a Smiths pcv valve and then to the inlet manifold. The oil filler cap was vented, same as a Cooper S.

Mine doesn't have a breather on flywheel housing is it a big job to put one in there? Could I run a breather out of the rocker cover?

Yes you can. I now do this, as I found the primary gear tossed oil up the flywheel housing breather at high rpm on long LH bends.
Rather than the big bulky Smiths pcv valve I now use a Toyota style straight 3/8" one.

Would you run it into a catch can? Would I need to run any other breathers?

Catch can for track, but car is less smelly inside if you run a PCV system.

So from rocker cover through pcv back to manifold would that work? Any ideas why I wouldn't be getting gears also doc?

Yep rocker cover to PCV to manifold. One breather is enough on a road motor unless there is blowby at the rings due to wear.

No gears is most likely not enough clutch stroke. Due to air in system, linkage wear, or leaking MC or slave cylinder seals.
Or, the clutch plate might be stuck to the flywheel if motor has been sitting for years.

Could I run a breather of the fuel pump blank off aswell as I'm running an electric fuel pump

I did that, once. Once it went over 4500 rpm the rods tossed heaps of oil up it. MiniMania in USA sell a baffled one, that may work, I dunno. Mine works fine off the rocker cover, but note it is NOT d directly above a pushrod.

Along with what Dr days, some people (including the manufacturer) say that on high g extended cornering (likely race track only) you can syphon oil out of the breather. I am unlikely to be in that situation but I run the breather into the rocker cover and then out the other side to a catch can just in case, so if any oil is extracted it drops out in the rocker cover. It goes from catch can to the carb

It goes into the rocker cover on the right then exits on the left.



Having said all of that, there car is running but not actually on the road yet, so it's still pretty theoretical

Had a mate that done that, was a brand new engine , took it for highway a run for about an hour , what a mess under the bonnet , we had to make a makeshift catch can for it for the trip home .

Haha I remember someone did that on a mitg run, couldn't stop oil tossing out. It really is a bad spot for a breather.
