Never had a plastic one lose a blade like that, but have had a metal 6-blade fan throw a blade through the radiator which wasn't pretty.

Yep, and I caught it on vid

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwZARpr7bjQ

radiator and engine were not mounted well enough (no rad bolts in yet, whoops) moved when I revved it.

Check that both engine and rad are secured, and secured to each other too.

For the fan to foul cowling, the engine must have moved fore/aft within the cowling.

Check engine steady from firewall to thermostat housing. This controls fore/aft movement of the engine near the radiator.

I had the same thing happen on the Hume Hwy at Yass in the middle of the night. Long way to the nearest Supercheap in Goulburn with no alternator and no cooling.

There are different spacer widths, can't tell from that but is it too close to the radiator? As the revs rise the fan moves a bit and it only takes a touch and whamm... plastic vs metal.

Ditto!

The white plastic fans are even worse than the yellow plastic!

My rad and engine mounts are solid. You may be on to something regarding the fan spacer. I will shave 5mm off it.
Once I take it a part

Thanks for all of the comments

there would be plenty of evidence if it'd touched the radiator - lots of flattened fins - it probably got a little crack in one blade and it let go, taking the rest with it...

I bet these plastic fans are not the same material or maker as the originals.

It could be that when it hit 50,000 rpm the blades flexed back towards the engine at touched the crank pulley.
Mine did until I put a spacer between the pump flange and fan to push it closer to the radiator.
You'd be surprised how much the fan flexes when it's asked to pump a lot of air.

That would be my bet as well..

Cheers, Ian

Ps shaving the spacer wil make it worse

Pps you do realise that the plastic fans come in a number of different sizes...ie blade width?? The white ones are the widest and there are several diffent yellow ones.. I don't know if this reflects age or what....

I was helping a friend fit his Mini engine back in car and when we started it we had a rag sitting near the wiper motor and as soon as the engine started the Fan sucked the rag in and took all the blades of a new plastic fan. Out again with Radiator to replace the fan again.

I had a white one blow up on me recently. Took the radiator with it. Replaced with a yellow plastic one off a late 80's Japanese Rover. *Crosses Fingers*

i wont fit a white one, not at all they`re really bad for that, "renowned" for it actually

the yellow ones aren`t as bad but still not wonderfull

we have plenty of the original metal fans here that we clean & paint for std issue engine rebuilds

but for my own cars i generally fit the metal 4-blade :-)

& yes you really do need to make sure that both your top & bottom rad-cowls are spot on, both top & bottom rad brakets "suit" the situation with the correct spacer behind the fan to suit the application

there are so many combinations that people "concoct" that aren`t right ending terribly for everyone involved

one of the tricks is to obtain the correct bottom cowl half,,, there are 4 different bottom cowl-halves (that i`ve seen), not counting the later phomy "one-piece) ones & the larger 1100 type ones

mix up the wrong items or add a few bent bits & others on horrible angles, &/or the cowls being cut & stuffed with,,, ive seen a whole clusterphark of crap being fitted up to some minis & it always ends badly

get the right (old skool) stuff & have it fitted correctly

early cars have short brakets & thing steel spacers
Late cars have long brakets & thick alloy spacers

generally
