Hi guys,

My mini has developed a stutter on initial throttle (Light or heavy), sort of like its bogging down before it then it takes off.
I assume its something to do with the carbie which is a 1 3/4 SU (1275).

So essentially I'm after some advice on what to adjust to rectify this (Runs great in higher RPM). I not very mechanical so go easy (outside of oil changes etc..).

Thanks.

Ryan.

Actually on another note whats the easiest way to flush the radiator ?

check for oil in the dashpot - the black screw thingy at the top of the carb. If it's empty, put some ATF in there and see what it's like

and radiator - undo the plug on the bottom

If you don't have a plug on the bottom of the radiator you'll have to get the lower hose off the bottom of the radiator, a fun job! If you remove the thermostat and open the heater tap, you can flush through the entire system

There is also a tap or plug at the back of the engine that I take out when flushing the system.

There is a picture of it here in the workshop manual.

Thanks Guys.

I've got some SU dashpot oil at home somewhere I'll give that a go.

Yeah no drain plug on the bottom of the radiator so looks like bottom hose off :/.

If it still stutters with dashpot oil in, try 20W50 engine oil instead - worked for me in both my cars.

I couldn't get my bottom hose off for the life of me, it was way too stiff :(

Ended up just taking off the top hose where it goes into the radiator and flushing through there. Top hose exit, garden hose in the radiator fill cap. Didn't work the first time but using a $9 cleaner solution seemed to have worked wonders.

Incidentally mine is stuttering like a bugger at take off too, but I just asked the garage to tune her up. Will ask what gets done!

If you want to stay sane, get someone else to remove the bottom hose, it's a bugger for new players.

Take it off at the pump. Use a big screwdriver to lever it.

Cheers guys.

There was plenty of oil in the dashpot but dumped all and sprayed with carb cleaner and added more of the same oil (Was zenith damper oil) i think its fixed now but need to take it for a longer test drive.

Ok another issue, mini makes a squeak on and off throttle, doesn't matter how much or little throttle. When the engines loaded and I accelerate there is no squeak so only on and off load.
If i put the car in 1st and push it back and forth it will squeak also. Any idea what this is?

What type of inner driveshaft joints does it have? The rubber type can swell up when oil gets to them and rub on the gearbox casing.
