Hey all,
Dos some work on he mini on the weekend. The flares on the rear were cracked. Took off the strip to remove the flares and they just fell to bits! Wanted to show some photos but the old iPhone is full and won't let me do anything.

Anyway, wanted to say that my starter motor keeps throwing out of engagement.
Is this normal?
Does it need a rebuild?
Has anyone experiences this?

Maybe you have too much advance? Starter kicking out is a 'feature' of the old Lucas starter, one reason some folks fit a pre-engaged Gemini one or similar.

What the Doc said...and add that the Bendix Gear/Ring Gear may be so worn it refuses to stay engaged...

Want to keep the motor original mk1. Best to get it rebuilt?

No...not just to fix a ring gear or bendix gear...both can be done without major surgery :idea: :D

[caveat: assuming compression is good and it runs fine]

Motor runs sweet and compression is fine. It's a pig of a thing to start though. Always needs "start ya b*stard" to get it fired up!

No...whip the starter off and inspect the bendix gear for wear...get a torch out an look at the ring gear through the orifice left by the starter...rotate the engine by hand to check all the way around...use your finger to check for wear on teeth etc

But watch out for those fingers!! :idea:

Should not need SYB each time...you have other Electrical/Fuel issue(s)...

What fuel you using?

Sounds more like timing to me ..BTDT... I have an 8lb flywheel with almost no teeth which was a real pain ..until the local guru gave it a tweak..

With everything in tune a Mini will kick off on virtually the first flick of the key.

Properly set up it will need an initial dose of choke.

Haven't been giving it choke. I used to and it would flood too easily.

Check the ignition timing. Starter throws out and disengages as soon as engine shows any sign of firing. Being normal. I don't think you have a starter issue at all. Starter is doing what it is told.

Hmm, so a tune required then? Seems to run ok when it has started.
I'll check out the starter motor but I agree that it seems to be doing what it needs to do.
I may need to try just a touch of choke too rather than none.
