Hi All, Two Questions: 1) what causes the hinge holes in doors to become elongated like this? 2) can it be fixed... if so how? The holes are awfully close to the edge! cheers. |

That is perfectly normal. It is the same as with a new door skin too. Don't "fix" it or you will lose adjustment. Bill |

Bill Thanks Bill, I have another set of doors and the holes are not as close to the edge as this... so I don't think its normal, yes the holes should be elongated but not to this extent, I'm worried it will eventually break all the way through. |

Does look a bit close. Trial fit both doors before prep and paint. |

I've recently fitted a new skin to a door frame and the hole looks exactly like your photo. Since all these doors were manually fitted, at the factory or afterwards, there were always variations in where the skin settles. The flat washer under the screw head into the hinge will spread the load. Definitely trial fit as per drmini. The common problem I have had with the top hinge is not being able to get the door far enough forward because the front "nose" of the hinge is slightly too long and hits the vertical seam cover before the door fits the opening. The nose of the hinge needs filing off - before painting! Bill |

HI Bill, Understand your point, thanks. To give you a better idea of the difference between the four doors I have... the holes in the set of doors of which the picture was taken vary from 2.3mm to 3.5mm from the edge. The other set of doors are at least 6mm from the edge... so a big difference. The doors will be trial fitted and if there is enough adjustment in them I would like to reduce the size of the holes/slots if possible so they wont eventually wear all the way through. cheers |
