the correct answer is "it would be coming from the #4 bronze bush or the #7 side bearing, or maybe something else" either way, the best way to tackle it is to pull the motor out and look... |

Can you tackle it from underneath with engine in? You can but try, but the diff cover has to come off. |

And if you don't use the same shims and gasket thickness it will muck up the bearing preload. New gaskets are 3x thicker than originals. These bushes are more than 0.007" undersized in the bore. They need to be bored to fit the drive yoke after press fitting to the cover. Engine out job, IMO. |

There is always some shaft side movement with the side cover off, the length of the shaft exaggerates it. re the rubber coupling rubbing, this is often due to the U-bolts being overtightened. That swells the rubber outwards. And modern coupling rubber is inferior to that used originally. A good mod is to toss both rubber couplings and fit QL5000 universal joints. Last `forever' compared to rubber ones. ![]() |

I suspect the noise is internal, could be a bearing as suggested, or a chipped tooth on the crown wheel. |

Just finished rebuilding my diff (literally this evening) found that the fibre washer as well as the no.4 bush was resulting in the lateral movement of the output shaft. As stated previously there will be some movement but heapes better now. |
