How many keys did minis originally have? I currently have one that fits the ignition. One the fits the drivers door and boot. And then one for each fuel tank. Is this correct? |

Roundies had only 1 key for ignition, door and boot. Clubbies (with steering lock) had 1 for ignition and another for doors and boot. Locking fuel tanks were optional or aftermarket. If lucky (like me) you got 2 caps with the same key. |

I recently got a new key cut for my Mini Van - a plain simple BMC typekey that unlocks the doors and boot and switches on the ignition and starts the engine. Took less than a minute and cost $6.00 at the local shopping centre. A guy I work with lost the keys and immobiliser to his new Mazda. It was the only one he had, the dealers don't always supply second set of keys it seems (added extra). Cost him nearly $600 for a new key and immobiliser, had to get it programmed to the ignition, security system, alarm, etc at the dealership. He justified the expense by saying it would be very difficult to steal his car compared to a Mini which had no theft proof systems. I then pulled my 10 inch steering wheel out of my breef case and told him this was my security system - removable steering wheel that can be taken off put back in less than 10 seconds. |

i used to open my torana with my house key and start it with the ignition wings. had to take the rotor button with me after it got pinched a few times. reckon 4 blokes could walk off with a mini though... |

I looked at having door, boot and ignition all keyed alike. Then realising that anyone could come along with one key and by a fluke open door, boot and start ignition, decided to have 3 seperate keys for each of these items, cutting the losses. Also installed an cut out switch for the electric fuel pump, and also considering installing a discrete GPS unit to track with my mobile. Maybe an overkill all this, paranoid maybe, but I have spent too much time and money and don't fancy doing it all again. |

Ah, so true timmy. I love his reasoning but I don't think I'll have keys everywhere though. Maybe colour code them on the one key ring. |

Both. I got a door key from John Smidt, cut a key for the ign, a locksmith broke my boot lock so I bought new, found a spare key for the fuel caps, and cut a key for the sta-put lock. 3 months later the old keys showed up, inside a book on my bookshelf, of all places! Wife swears she didn't put it away... |
