So I'm halfway through installing a new dash, and have the 3 clock cluster out and speedo cable sitting there smiling at me. It's been clicking and doing little jumps so I thought a lube couldn't hurt while it's out. It might not fix the clicking, but maybe it might? Thing is I have little idea of the construction of the cable other than that - it's a nightmare to attach in the engine bay - any lube shouldn't be too close to the speedo Question is, how easy is it to slide the inner out and add some lube (I have a teflon spray that I was thinking of using, rather than a thick grease)? I don't want to slide the inner out and leave myself with a bigger problem than I started with, but if it's easy enough to slide out and reseats itself when you slide it back in then I'll have a crack. Thanks for any advice |

It should slide out unless it's jammed in the square drive shaft at the bottom. Wiggle and pull upwards gently. If it resists you need to pull the whole cable out. Then if the inner has any kinking I'd replace the lot. |

Thanks Doc, Do you recommend sliding it out all the way anyway and giving it a lube? I just don't want to find myself in a position where I can't get it back in. |

If it slides out it will go back in fine. |

just make sure it goes back in all the way - if it doesn't go all the way in it'll eventually round out the end of the drive.... |

Bother. Can't seem to get the inner cable out of the sheath Is there a trick to it? I don't want to pull too hard or squeeze the white plastic too hard and end up making the problem bigger than it is now. |

Geez unbelievable but try as I might could not get the inner out. Felt like I was going to break the white plastic bit or at the very least squash the square end out of shape. Thoughts on if the inner being this stuck seems like the cause of the clicking speedo? |

maybe rovers have a different speedo cable that has a keeper to stop it coming up... suck it up and take it off the gearbox, takes patience but it's not that bad |

The answer is simple. All you need is a long extension bar with a universal joint on the end and undo the small bolt that holds in the speedo drive. The speedo cable will come off with the speedo drive attached to it. Remove the broken cable from the drive and screw on the new one.
