Looks too square to be a pop rivet head to me, they are more rounded. Also the top in the photo looks broken rather than drilled. It looks like it is harder material than pop rivet tails are made from, they tend to stretch before failure tapering to a ragged uneven tear-line.

Not sure what it is though. Looks machined or forged. Hammer driven rivets usually have a domed head rather than square like that too.

I'm with Tim... it looks like the end off a locking pin or something, but I can't place where it might come from

what type of gearbox do you have?

a third of a spark plug cap?

It is quite tiny. The spark plug part was actually rather interesting as it could be an iridium or platinum disc from a spark plug, but it wouldn't be magnetic.

could it be the head off a forged rivet from a bearing cage, such as the main double row bearing?

yes its tiny and very hard, not a rivet. it has a machined step in it as well.

does sound like a good answer, kinda easy to check & fix too, radiator out, timing cover off...

Could be 1/2 a rivet from the First Motion Shaft Bearing cage?

Can you post clearer, larger Photos, Perhaps from a few different angles. Would like to see the end that's sitting on the magnet please.....
Might shed a bit more light on the puzzle.
