 GuamMini, Sir...can I respectfully suggest that you place all your questions in the one thread associated with your GT...you will find it easier for all to track that way

Actually, it's better that separate questions are posted in separate threads, because different members have interest and knowledge in different areas.

If a member posts all of their questions about their own car in a single thread then

a/ many members will not bother to look in the thread, assuming it is just that person talking about their car rather than looking for help on a particular issue

b/ members searching for information on a certain topic like 'clubman GT steering column installation' will find it a lot more difficult than it is already

however, if a member posts a question like 'how do I install a clubman GT steering column', and then follows up with further questions related to the same topic, then I agree that they should keep them in the same topic.

so...

GuamMini, Sir, I respectfully ask you to continue to post the way you have been :)

9yatah, Sir, I respectfully ask you to consider my points above and allow members to post their questions as single topics if they feel it the question is worthy of it's own topic ;)

no! I'm keeping them right where they are!!

prime example - an engine smoking at idle is something many people will face, and they'll be delighted to find a thread dedicated to that, with a response through to resolution. Likewise, people looking for information on GT steering columns will feel the same

As an initial answer I will offer that GT column is same as all "clubman's". And has the ignition switch/binnacle fixed to the column. Mounted the same way as earlier mini's. Workshop manual can help with assembly details. I have a couple that I use but the Gregorys for 1971-1978 Minis covers the basics (Bought mine a few years ago on ebay, Aussie published by Haynes)

Just to 'throw a spanner in the works' not all Clubmans have column mounted ignition barrels, my 1971 Clubman is fitted with the key in the dash on the same panel as the heater controls. I'm undecided if I want to leave there or put a column mounted ignition barrel on instead.

is the 7/16" bolt at the bottom supposed to slide in easy? I was pounding mine and it would not go in, it damaged the bolt thread and need to get a new one.....do i install the bolt first before mounting the column.

Need help please i forgot how to do this long time ago

The bolt is NOT fitted before mounting the column.

There is a groove in the spline that the steering column fits over. This should be lined up for the bolt to go through.
Once lined up should through without too much effort.

You may need to jiggle the column up or down a bit to get alignment.
I use a Philips head screwdriver to check how it is aligning and help lever into the final alignment.

Sorry...but that is terrifying...the huge Achilles heel in Minis is the pinch bolt and splines, loss of steering can be the result...if you don't have the knowledge...wait and learn a lot more before undertaking this repair...or, please have a qualified mechanic give it the once over before you drive it

Its still there...I just thought I would politely explain to our overseas friend, bashing his steering column, how important this area is to get right in a Mini...its all good :D

I see your point Syme...Burt, you can add a Heading within a Thread that the search engine will pick up if you are looking for Washer Bottle stuff etc...I just thought that Guam had a bunch of questions he had sprinkled all over and it might help if people could put it in the context of his car...(i.e. overseas, away from the suppliers/providers we know and love etc)

As i was installing the steering wheel i noticed the steering column pulls up and down towards celing and steering rack. I noticed the it was moving but the steeringvrack piniin does noes not move. Do i need to thighten the pinch bolt? Or is the column not into pinion deep enough? Thanks

Yes...after carefully examining splines on pinion and inner column...also, make sure you have the correct pinch bolt in good condition and correctly oriented with its flat and a secure lock-nutting arrangement(absolutely critical to your safety down the track)...read up on it in Ausmini  :D

Make sure there is still a gap in the bottom clamp when the bolt is done up. Also make sure your splines are clean and have some depth to them.

Here is a good gap

Couldn't find a photo of a normal one showing the gap.
