Post subject:  Chassis number for registration
Can someone point me in the right direction before I take my Deluxe to Vic Roads for registration. Which numbers should be used for chassis number. Is it the numbers on the radiator cowling or the numbers behind the master cylinders. I want to make sure they get it right the first time as I have read that mistakes have been made in the past. Do Vic Roads have a book that tells where to look.

Not sure about VicRoads guidelines, but try to get the bulkhead numbers as the chassis number.
If their book directs them to the radiator cowl, make sure they start the numbers with"M2/05...." for the Deluxe.

Yep. You should only use the stamped numbers just under the ID plate behind the master cylinders. If you use the M2/05 numbers on the radiator shroud you will be registering the car with an entirely new chassis number.

Unfortunately, in Victoria the 3 or 4 digit Car Numbers used for the early cars were often assigned to other registrations such as trailers. When I came to register my 997 Cooper its car Number (4 digits) was already assigned to a trailer and VicRoads insisted that I stamp a new chassis number on the car.I was able to negotiate on this and they agreed to allow the YK2S1 prefix being added to the original Car Number which I then stamped on the gusset near the regulator. Not perfect but at least it made more sense than the totally
unrelated number they wanted me to use originally.

When are these dopes going to realise that sooner, rather than later, their "patch stuff up" or better "Make stuff up" records will bite them on the bum :?:

Database purification with little or no coordination between States with their Islands of Information will/is becoming a nightmare as well... :?

That's like here in NSW, where most inspectors think ALL Minis have the chassis number on the rad shroud...!
I know of a 1970 legally reshelled (then) with `body in white' Mini K where they used the part number printed on the shell!!

I can't see any issues with a trailer and motorbike and car sharing the same chassis number. Not like your going to mix them up

Yeah same when I did mine, girl at RTA doing it noted an old Chrysler and a trailer matched, she just needed the OK from her supervisor to go ahead and use it.

Of course it shouldn't matter, they can't be mixed up.

I had that problem when I registered my Cooper a in NSW and they wanted to use the 4 digit number under the ID plate but it was already used on a trailer and they would not use it and started talking about stamping new numbers. After an hour or more of "discussion" with various people and explaining they agreed to use the full YKG2S2 number after they found cars registered with that sequence in their system. Had no such problems in QLD as they just accepted the previous registration details.

With the age of our cars I doubt anybody at Vicroads would still be there from when the cars were new.
You need to explain the difference to them of the body number and the actual car number. They are not the same thing.
Body numbers and production codes such as M205 for Mini Deluxe were for internal BMC use only.
The actual car number is the full code stamped on the ID plate.
The Y**2S* is the body number prefix and the remaining numerals ****** etc complete the actual car ID and the full code and numerals are all part of the car ID and should be what is recorded on the rego papers.
The numerals only are stamped on the firewall below the ID plate and this was done after the body had been painted and IIRC as it went down the production line after the ID tag had been attached.
Body numbers start from 001.
Car numbers start from 501.
There should be approx 500 difference between the two but it isn't always the case.

The genius who did my car for historic rego put in my engine number as the chassis number! It might be the only 9YATAH-xxxxx registered car going around :lol:

It was previously registered with the 5 digit car number...
