I can not select gears on my remote gearbox when the engine is running. The gears changed fine, then it was hard to get reverse, then first and second. Now no gear selection. There are no leaks in hydraulic system. Any ideas? |

selector knuckles down the back of the motor are the first & easiest thing to check - use a torch to look down the passenger side of the carb at where the shaft comes out of the diff housing then into the box. The bolts can come loose |

Clutch is dragging (not disengaging properly). You are not getting enough travel at the release bearing. Possible causes- Worn MC or slave cylinder seals, Wear in linkage, Air in system, Low fluid, Seal spreader missing from inside slave cylinder (all recent cheapo aftermarket cylinders have none to save money). It had a new $42 slave cylinder replaced and has been sitting a while since being bleed. The vehicle also does not get used very often. Will check in the morning. |

My bet is the seal spreader missing. Symptoms are typical. If you have an old original cylinder, pinch the spreader from it. |

Also check the big stop nut on release isn't bottoming out. Have you tried starting it with it in gear and clutch in? Sometimes the clutch plate can 'freeze' to flywheel if stored for long periods or in damp conditions. |

my bet is throw-out brg colapsing or ball on the end of the clutch arm broken/cracked ![]() |

I changed the $42 slave cylinder with a Lockheed. I can now just select all gears except first. When I start the car with the clutch pedal fully engaged in first gear, the car moves very slowly forward. |

How do I adjust to get more clearance, as I can't select first and can only just select all other gears. |

Is the clutch pedal going hard before it hits the floor? |

Just for fun take the circlip out of the slave cylinder. Behind the boot, can do in car. [edit] I notice genuine recent ones have no circlip or groove. and do still have the seal spreader. |

I was going to suggest this as it will help to compensate for play in worn mechanical parts. Very hard to diagnose things properly over the internet. Did the pushrod get replaced with a new "shorter pushrod"? Has it been bled correctly? What were the original symptoms that led you to replace the slave in the first place? |

Changed the slave cylinder to genuine lockheed and bled, put a longer push rod in. It is now like a new gearbox, just slides into gear. King Regards for the pointers. |
