Hi everyone,

Considering a thermo fan, now that it's coming into summer - what is the best one to buy? It would be going into a deluxe, are they any available that don't require any mods really?

I have a fairly seriously souped up 1293 Mini I drove in Indonesia (hot tropical weather!) for a year. Cooling system is stock standard (except alloy radiator which I don't think is any more efficient than the standard one?) and the temperature gauge never got to halfway even in gridlocked traffic (normal in Bali!).
So, in my experience, a properly set up standard cooling system is all you need. Sort that out and toss the other stuff."

Well I'm not sure, I've pulled everything down over the past few days - head off, (head gasket fine), water pump in good nic, and high flow type, fan in good shape (right way around), radiator looks clean.

Even in winter, you would pull up and idle for a few mins, temp would climb almost straight away (checked also with infrared)

Also did this with properly tuned SU's, and a weber , so not a mixture issue.

I'm just stumped, thought a thermo fan couldn't hurt... they're pretty widely used.

Something is not right. What's the thermostat doing? You could trying running the car without a thermostat (should run cool) and see what happens while you test the thermostat (boil it up in a pot of water) itself to see if it's opening at the rated temp using your infrared gizzmo?
My feeling is that a thermo fan may reduce the symptoms but not solve an underlying problem with the cooling system..

Thermostat is definitely OK. I had already tried the 'put in hot water' test. Thermostat begins to open @ 65deg and fully opened by 75 which it is rated for.

I'm with you. My gauge sits in the middle in traffic on a hot day (stock Oz 3 core rad + matic heater).

I have the head off it here and the gasket is fine. I suspect his alloy radiator may be part blocked (as they do).
JP has a super 2 core, I suggest he fits that.

I checked that last time he drove up here. Modified curve Pulsar dizzy with 30deg total advance @ 3500. It's fine.

Yes, it has a bypass hose (made it hard to get the head off without undoing it first )

The only thing I can think of is that the radiator is partly blocked - being alloy I've no way of really checking.

Will fit the super 2 core I have when I get the head back!
