Post subject:  Tapered bearings

I'm replacing my front bearings and have the hub out and I thought I'm suppose to have tapered bearing as its a Cooper S, can someone shed some light on this for me as I'm confused now I was about to order new bearing but not sure what to get now.
Also is that ring broken or is it supposed to like that ?

The ball bearing and tapered roller bearings are the same size so they can be interchanged. The ball bearing ones are much cheaper though, so might have been substituted in the past.

The Photos show that the retaining ring for the outer race has come adrift, and the bearing is now on the CV joint. The ring is of a split design, but is supposed to ride in a groove that prevents it from slipping out under normal circumstances.

The fact that you were able to pull the outer race out by hand leads me to think your hubs may be stuffed. If the bearing race spins in the hub then you're in trouble as the fit on these parts is very close.

Before going any further with that hub I would have them looked at by someone in the game.

The split ring is the seal spacer, it's got pulled out because the ball bearing is stuck on the CV. It doesn't sit in a groove, it goes between the inboard bearing and seal. Roller bearings have a spacer about 0.200" wide. Ball bearing seal spacer is about .090" wide.

So 69k1100 your saying the inner bearing is too close to the cv and has slipped out of the hub and has slipped up the drive shaft

There is no retaining ring for the inner bearing. It goes hard against the CV. Find a drawing...!

I took it to mechanic and even he wasn't sure as there is no grove in the hub for it to sit in, but I'm sure he will sort it.... Thanks for all your help

All the split seal spacer does is stop the seal going in too far and hitting the bearing. Half the minis around have none, you just don't knock the seal right in. ;)
