Can anybody tell me where the large hose that comes from the bottom of the carbon canister on an '81 Moke, ends up? I'm thinking the air filter, but this car has an after-market filter on an 1.75" SU.

Doesn't go anywhere doesn't it. Isn't it the vent?

Thanks Peter, I think you may be right.
I found an illustration which shows air entering the canister through the pipe connection at the bottom. I guess I'll just leave it without anything attached to that fitting, and hope the roadworthy checker lets it through.

Sometimes on vehicles they'll have a hose routed to a body or chassis void, think its just to help stop the rain and crud getting in. :-)

I may be totally wrong, but I thought a Carbon Canister was to collect fumes from the fuel tank and then burn them through the carburettor in non vented fuel tank applications.
This was to stop carbon fumes escaping to the atmosphere when you had a vented fuel tank.
The beginnings of emission controls.

Yep, you're 100% right. When you're not driving the tank vents through canister and the carbon 'cleans' the fumes, when you start the engine it purges the canister by sucking air through carbon filter.
