intermitent fault help

Post subject:  intermitent fault help
Have a 998, good compresion on all cylinders, will start up and run well one day, the next will either start and die, then restart and die, or run on three cylinders and then back to four, Or die when you go to rev it up. Has great oil pressure, no signs of head gasket. It has recon carby, new distributor. New wiring harness aswell. Any suggestions on where I should start to diagnose? Havent had it out on the road, only started up in shed.

Do you have tight terminal connections on the coil? Are they nice and hard to push on?

If all those mods were done at the one time, then you have the job in front of you. Hopefully it is something simple as suggested above :idea:

When all else fails go back to the basics...

I reckon you should check if the distributor is tight in the block... sounds like it's moving

I'd do one thing at a time till the fault is rectified. If you do a heap of stuff before rechecking, you won't know what the issue was. You can chase stuff all day and still not get there.

Electrical connections.
Fuel and fuel filter.
Carby needle tight in place.
Light oil in dashpot.
Sticking dashpot.
Plug leads and plugs.
Points. Correct dwell. Connections.
Condenser.
Coil. Are the connections tight and the right way around.
Dist cap cracked.

If it starts and runs on three cylinders, I'd be more inclined to look at which one its missing on. Start it and if it misses, let it run and turn it off immediately it hits 4 cylinders. Pull plugs and check for odd one. Could also be sticky valve, especially if its an inlet one, that causes back flow inlet inlet.

Lets just say due to a pay out with BP i can not say to much. But my New mini was having cold start issues. And my mk1 S ran on 3 cylinders and backfired and ran poorly
Changed from ultimate 98 to 95 abd instantly all my issues disappeared.
Bp 98 is supplied to other people so give it a try before spending $$$ on parts
