when making a 'custom' needle, do you start with the fattest, leanest needle you can find, or is it possible to buy a blank to start from?

For my car i always started with a std needle and polished where needed, i have tried many non std needles but if yo start closwer you dont to do a whole heap, just be careful of not going to far, i have a number of really rich needles if anyone interested lol
