Post subject:  Mini Rebuild also looking for help in the Newcastle area

Hello All,
I have just completed a body restoration on a 1970 mini cooper S.I now have the job to reassemble my car, I am not sure where all the parts go also there are some parts missing. I live in the Newcastle area NSW, does anyone have a car that I can look at from time to time? This would help me with my fit up .I maybe able to help others with bodywork problems .I am also looking for hydrolastic bags for sale. I used to work for British Leyland in Sydney in the Experimental area making body parts from drawings etc. When the company closed in 1974 I moved on to other jobs. I am 70 years old. Recently a mini owner asked me how to fit a battery box. I suggested he cut the old one out using a small grinder and a 3mm cutting wheel. Cut in 2mm from the top edge all round remove battery box ,clean up the existing top flange with a belt linisher or 80 grit paper. Trial fit the box use self tapper screws to hold in place . Remove battery box and use a body panel adhesive the type which mixes in the tube at the end 3M or Sika .Apply a bead to both surfaces and fit the battery box using the self tapper screws .When the adhesive has cured remove the self tappers and fill holes with the supplied adhesive. Note the panel adhesive has micro glass beads in the tubes so there will always be maximum adhesion and strength, as you are probably aware these adhesives are used everywhere in the vehicle manufacturing business ,In my opinion stone guard is the best to spray in the battery box. Spray can is fine. ALWAYS trial fit panels before final installation. With my Mini I fitted 2 new guards, A panels ,front apron, rear lower,
Sills, both front floors, door skins and some other small panels .Painted Jet Red PPG paint .To do a complete body after sand blasting takes a lot of time ,and you guys know some mini panels are not easy to fit. Allen P767676

Welcome Allen...should be a few Novocastrians who can offer you help...in exchange for the odd "insiders" war story :D

Hey Alan, I agree Lincoln at Ausmini Spares is a great way to go. Otherwise, maybe through another post onto this thread when you need a look and one of us can give you a look I'm sure. Mine's not quite ready yet though sorry!
