Hi All
I'm just trying to clean up my numbers stamped on the rad support and the body number under the ID plate, I thought the number on the rad was about 500 different from the body number 3688 is this right ?
The rad number is 2 then 06 under it with 3201
And should there be more than just 3688 stamped under the ID plate ?

Those numbers are all correct , the 500 difference is only approximate , depends where it was on the production line and if it had been held up for some reason and for how long or pushed forward , mine is 490 difference :D

The numbers do sound about right at 487 difference, though it is an unusual variation. If you look carefully at the radiator cowl, you should have M2 over 06 within a circle, then your 3201 stamped after. The numbers should read as if you are standing where the engine is, not from outside the car..
There should only be the 3688 stamped under the ID plate.

The number is if you are standing in the engine bay, just the angle I took the pick at, maybe I need a bit more elbow grease to find the M

Yes, only the numbers below the ID plate, no other markings (on mine at least). On the shroud I don't have a circle around the M2 over the 06, in fact the way mine was stamped you can't see the M only the

2
06

and the numbers of course.

From previous threads that is not uncommon. Depended on the angle they held the stamp I guess. My numbers are 493 apart.

M2/15 and M2/50 had a circle but not the M2/05 or M2/06.

Yeah mines the same, also 68 model, poorly stamped at same angle, can barely see the M or the 0. Probably same bloke stamped both. Mines also not in circle.

I think the ones with a circle are UK manufactured panels machine stamped with a circular die and the Aussie made cars were hand stamped.

Some are stamped inside a circle and some aren't.
My car, late 68 build, has the M2 06 barely visible, poorly stamped, and it isn't in a circle.
It's stamped to be read from the engine bay.
The number stamped on the radiator surround is the body number.
I have seen another S a few cars later than mine with M2 06 stamped inside a circle at the rear end of the top radiator surround and able to be read from inside the car - ie upside down when read from the front of the car.
So who really knows how the bodies were stamped and if there was a standard method that wasn't always followed.
Winabbey may have some info in his encyclopaedia of all things Mini.

The number stamped on the bulkhead behind the master cylinders is the car number and it is stamped after the body was painted.
It should match the number on the ID plate pop riveted to the bulkhead.
My S car number and body number have a 504 difference.

Thanks everyone as usual there seems to be lots of variants, but I'm sure what I have is right and not been faked

I only have more recent data for the body stampings covering the Leyland Mini and Moke, not the earlier round-nose variant. The size of the stamps would be the same but the location is different.
