Post subject:  First time poster . Fuel problems
Good morning all

First time poster here , having some fuel problems and thought this might be the place to get the experienced answers I need

Recently got an upgrade on the Carbie , inch and a half up to inch and three quarters and a pod filter.
Ever since then I have had a strong smell of fuel when cornering ( mostly round a bouts) . I have changed the fuel bowl gasket as that had a slight leak but I'm still having the issues . I guess it could be from the change of filter or the float in the fuel bowl ,but Im just guessing and that's why I'm here now ;)

Need to provide more information mate...

What capacity engine?
Any mods like head work/extractors?
Is the 1 3/4 new?
Have you checked all fuel lines? both metal and rubber?

Unless it is tuned to be a fuel gulper, you could be over-fuelling the engine

What part of Straylia are you in?

Well I just have one (hopefully relevent) question. The float bowl lid. What is its orientation? I have seen in the past fuel come out of the tiny hole under the fuel inlet on some corners, which was funny enough on roundabouts.

Brisbane mate

1100 cc engine

Standard head and extractors as far as I know

It's a 2nd hand 1 3/4

No visible signs of fuel leaks after the cornering . Only leak I had was the fuel bowl gasket and I've replaced that already

All lines and tanks are fine

This has only happened since I got the Carbie and new filter put on it , I was just hoping to troubleshoot and fix it my self . The company that put the new Carbie on my car are abit of a drive from where I live and I do a lot of working away from home ,so I've not had the chance to get back to them

Well, leave it sitting until you have time to get stuck into it..."don't fool with fuel" :D

I think it may be over-carburetted to a certain extent...how near to Murarrie? Ipswich? are you :?: :idea: :wink:

PS Where is the fuel pump? Still the mechanical unit under your extractors?

The float level might be a tad high, or the N/S might be worn. Try putting the top off your old car by onto it.
Also, some have two pipes on them, ones fuel inlet, the others a breather hose fitting. Has it got a carbon canister?

Minis have a distinct possibility of fire due to the car by being straight above exhaust, so it's good to check it's not leaking onto exhaust.

hi

when you say 1 3/4 are you referring to a hs6? there are h6s and probably hitachis around as well and i am not sure the float bowls are all canted for a mini.... i am thinking a combination of high float level , angle difference/ corner producing fuel going down the overflow pipe.. even though it clears the hot bits it probably still drips onto underneath of car and could contribute to fuel smell.

Maybe a shield and spacer(heat proof) might help.

Fuel connection on lid should normally point towards front of car.
Check float setting, I think is 5/32" from float to lid with lid vertical, float hanging down.

from memory I think the lid is facing west if your looking at the front of the car , I'm home next week so I will give that a bash !!

Can I ask why you put the 1.75 on?
Your Engine from what you describe is a Std 1100 with extractors.
A 1.5 with a pod filter and decent filter pad, will give you a better torque figure down low that running a 1.75. Unless you intend on driving it flat out all the time, the benefits are minimal.
pretty much all you will be doing is using more fuel(because is sound like its not setup right) and losing power where you will be driving it most.)
Bigger isn't always better, unless its combined properly with other modified components.
My suggestion, take the 1.75 off, stick the 1.5 back on with the filter.
Keep the 1.75 and rebuild it and wait until you change your cam and modify the head to suit.
Then the 1.75 will actually be of a benefit.

Just my two cents. Not worth alot, but something to take away for later thought.
