Yesterday I started my spare 850 engine for the first time after a complete rebuild. All was going well until I discovered that it was leaking heavilly from the oil filter. It has a new paper filter and rubber seal on top of the canister and the bolt was quite tight. Tonight I'll recheck that the seal hasn't been compromised, but is there anything else that I should check in the process? I understand that the oil is under pressure when it's running, but I wouldn't have thought that it poured out like it did. Thanks, James. |

Does it have a rubber washer under the bolt washer? |

I agree with the previous stated common causes. Where is the leak? Dripping from the bottom only or running down the sides. Dripping from the bottom only = Rubber washer under the bolt head. Running down the sides = (Original seal was left in and a second one fitted) or (the new seal is not located properly) or (a taller filter has been fitted and it hasn't allowed the body to be seated on the o-ring.) You also may have loose or cross threaded fittings / stripped threads on the filter head. |

I learned a valuable lesson today. The oil filter comes with 2 rubber seals, one thick and one thin. I was running with the thin one. I changed it out to the thicker one, problem solved. Now I've got to continue to clean all of the oil off the garage floor. A little bit oil goes a long way, a lot of oil goes one hell of a long way. |

At least it will stop your garage floor from rusting ![]() |
