Post subject:  the teeth are all gone on my belt drive kit

Hi to all,
The belt has lost all its teeth on the belt drive kit in my mini and it is only 19000km old!
It also bent five push rods and the motor was only turning over at 1400rpm.
I hope the valves are ok!
So when I get a new belt for it(and some spares) how do you re-time the motor?
Thanks Olly.

Hi Olly,
It depends which kit it is- ie how old. The early one I have has timing marks. For the procedure on the later vernier one, do a search on the MM/MS messageboard- it came up in the last few months.
If the pushrods are bent, I seriously would pull the head and check the valves and pistons..

<edit> Karcraft carry the belts.

hmmmm...thats a bummer about your belt. I thought they were the dogs danglies....they are expensive too.

Did you fit it?

When you refit it, check carefully for any burrs anywhere on the teeth of the pulleys/gears. These can cut the belt. I'ts easy to bruise them when removing/refitting them, even with a puller. I polished inside the crank one to make it an easy slide-on fit.

I change my belt every 40,000 miles. Last time it still looked perfect, inside and out- I changed it anyhow.

Post subject:  not the valves / pistons.....

The kit is alloy vernier mini spares one that has a vent on it and it has no timing marks( i wish I had put one on it now) .
I fitted the belt around a year ago.
Karcaft did have the belts - but have no stock (maybe 3 weeks).
I will have to the pull the head off-dam the valves cost a bit and I hope the pistons look ok.

Try Greg Malaure at Mini Classic in Ermington. He does racers, so may just have one. 8)

<edit> or ring BSC Technology and quote the number on the belt. They carry Dayco? belts. It's just a standard style timing belt with 52 teeth.

Thanks Dr Mini,
I will see if Greg has one.
I have to go to Grahams to see if he has finished my alloy five port head .
He may have to fix the head that is on the mini now as well...
Olly
