Does a 1966 Oz mini have the smaller "dust excluder" boot fitted inside the bigger square-section boot, visible at the base of the gear stick? My '69 and '70 minis have this smaller boot also but there is no sign of one for the earlier mini? Thanks. |

I had an idea those smaller boots arrived with Mini Ks or thereabouts when the gear changes had the large dish retainer plate holding the stick down |

IIRC the first OZ built Deluxe and S (not sure how early) had a remote change that used a pressed metal cup shaped piece that went up inside the base of the rubber boot (there was no inner boot) and supposedly sealed the remote change from dirt getting in. Not very successfully. Movement of the remote housing chewed up the base of the rubber boot until it wore through. My 68 S has this type and the boot has been changed several times. The remains of a MK2 S I had used the flat disc and the inner boot. Can you still get an inner boot? RonR |

Our Mini K (approx. 280th car built) had the extra inner boot and large retainer plate. |

Is this for the direct shift on the early minis? Mine appeared to have a foam disk on it under the boot, it disintegrated when I tried to get it off. |

I think you are right that the 2nd boot came with the K in 1969 onwards when the gear stick mechanism was held down by a thick, flat plate and the inner boot lip went over the edge of the flat plate. |

Bill B mentions a metal plate replacing the pressed metal retainer on the gear stick retaining mechanism to allow the fitting of a small boot to provide better sealing. Does any one have a drawing of this plate? My ageing brain seems to recall that this plate had a gate incorporated to prevent accidental engagement of reverse.Yes I may be wrong. If so the size and shape of the hole would be a huge help. |

This is a photo of the gear stick assembly on my Mk 2 as it's off the car at present. The plate looks to be assembled before the 2 halves are bonded together - making removal or installing one not easy. But need to look in daylight to be sure. |

My Sept 1970 S is exactly the same as Bill's above. The inner boot was in good nick so I cleaned it and reused it. |

Attachment: Gear lever parts.jpg Attachment: Mk 2 gear change lever assembly.jpg There is a difference in the two arrowed parts, one is dished and one is a plate. Can't find the boot in my PUB1056M. What is the number for the parts catalog for the Mk2 Mini's? Also what is the boot part number.
