Well, today I finally got around to assembling a new set of plug leads using four new old stock WC 187 Champion plug caps. These suckers cost twice as much as my second Mini did in 1974! However, they are period correct & are even featured in the engine bay pic of the 1967 Mini brochure, so I'm wrapt to finally have them! After I've finished showing 'em off, they'll be installed... |

These came from Japan, & I reckon that the Japanese were savvy enough to stock up on as much BLMC stuff as they could while it was still available. - I also bought a pair of genuine NOS Cooper S over riders from the same company, "Dinky Incorporation", they were still in the original Elastoplast tape protection material & made of the much thicker, better fitting steel than the aftermarket ones. Those were not cheap either, but saved a lot more searching around! I think he (Naoki) may still have access to some more WC 187 Caps via the Japanese parts network.. |

I've seen a number of photo's but I'm still unsure of the correct cap for the year of each model. All of the early Australian Mini parts books list part 8G576 as the cap, with 12A365 sleeve and 7H6894 clip. I can't find a picture of 8G576 but assume it's the one shown at the start of this thread - Champion WC187 that Phillb has shown us in another thread. Here are two photos of a GT engine bay. One is from the crash test photo that appears to be a late rather than early model (with the four-way breather). The other is part of an article in Australian Country magazine dated Feb 1972, so may be a prototype or press/demo model. Since they are both the same cap it would be a safe guess that it was used during most of the GT production. For those using the repo of the rubber type shown a the beginning of this thread you will find a modern 90deg clip as pictured will fit inside with a bit of lube. This makes far better connection than the spike type one that often comes with old caps. Also be aware the metal sealing ring clip is not usually included, regardless BMC used a rubber sleeve instead. It's worth fining an auto election with the tool for fitting these, does a nice neat secure job.  Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Here's a shot of a Mark 1 Cooper S power plant being hot run tested in the Zetland plant prior to installation in a vehicle. I've cropped the image around the spark plugs although it's not particularly clear, unfortunately. I think I can make out Champion rubber plug caps like those in the picture that started this thread. I was trying to get a close up of the yellow number tags. Looks like the numbers are at right angles to the lead and the original yellow tags are wider than the ones supplied these days. |
