Getting conflicting information, some folk telling me they're fine, some telling me I can't use them in a road car, that you must install reclining seats?? I'm confused... Was going to order a pair of these http://www.revolutionracegear.com.au/index.php?PSO=245&PSID=4665005_20&PSV=Primary&EGPUID=102348 to fit in my car, but now I'm not sure what to do ha ha.

Anyone used Cobra Monaco's in their road registered Mini? :?:

All early (Oz) Minis came with fixed back seats.

If your car is pre (seat) ADR then pretty much anything goes. Post the ADR (in NSW) its illegal to fit a seat not originally provided by the manufacturer as standard or an option to that model.

I've been refused a pink slip because my car (early Corolla) had "non standard" seats. They actually came from a later model Corolla but were picked up because they were the wrong colour :evil:

First you need to read your State's regulations and then think about engineers certificates if appropriate.

Reclining seats isn't a rego thing, I think theyre yanking your chain. Have a look whats in an early moke, and they get passed as seats. :-)
The seats do have to be ADR approved or from an vehicle that is. They will check the mounts so either check before fitting or over engineer them.

So many variables, and I'll assume fixed back means the seat can not fold backwards, only forwards or not at all.
-Firstly what year is your mini? Pre Rover (any Australian built mini) they all are fixed backs from the factory (only fold forwards to allow access to the rear/behind them).
-AFAIK if you are changing the seat and seat subframe it needs to be inspected and approved by an engineer to meet ADR's.
-What state or territory are you in? Different locations have different rules.

Your best bet is to contact a local automotive engineer and ask them. Your local Department of Transport should be able to point you in the right direction.

As said, there is no requirement for a recliner, though if there is a rear seat installed there will need to be access for rear seat passengers. (generally if you dont want to carry anyone inthe rear, or if you have a rear half cage installed, they will want the rear seat removed and the vehicle registered as a 2 seater).

The ADR requiring head restraints i.e. head rests applies to passenger cars built from January 1972 (https://infrastructure.gov.au/roads/motor/design/pdf/22.pdf)

I couldn't see any claims anywhere that the Cobra Monaco Pro's have been tested to see if they satisfy the ADR requirements. They would need to satisfy ADR 22 if the cars date of manufacture is 1 Jan 1972 or later, up until end December 1974. ADR 22A applied from 1 Jan 1975, so the detail of the testing etc has likely changed slightly.
Seats that satisfy a later edition ADR will meet or exceed an earlier ADR.

Same rules apply Australia wide... though many engineers/states are bit slack on their understanding of the law, mainly due to outsourcing of the function to private entities.

Thanks for the replies chaps. The car is a '76 Clubman and I'm in QLD. I was planning on using these Cobra sub frames http://www.revolutionracegear.com.au/index.php?PSO=245&PSID=4684000000&PSV=Primary&EGPUID=289836. I have zero intention of having rear-seat passengers, didn't think of getting the car registered as a 2-seater, wonder if that's a tricky thing to do? :?

Those frames wont suit the later cars as it doesn't have the latch mechanism to clip to the floor rail. In fact, they look like the same frames we have for the Cobra seats that we fitted to our '69 Mini K, which only took a few hours of modification to both the frames and the Mini seat mount brackets to get them sitting in a useable position!

On the up-side, in my experience Qld is one of the easiest States to get anything signed-off.... which is why a Qld Mod Plate is generally not worth a knob of goat poop interstate! Not sure what the process is to change the seating capacity in Qld, but a call to Qld Transport would probably be the best place to ask. As I would expect it will need some sort of inspection for the engine swap, etc before first rego, it will probably tie into that somehow.
