Hi All,

This is a photo of a new water pump. Noting how far, the impellor is away from the body. This is not good, as it creates cavitation, resulting in what you can see in the photo's below. This impellor, I press on further to about a 5-10 thou gap.



This is the result of what happens, the cavitation is starting and you can see where it is being eaten away. Note, you can see the impellor is starting to be eaten away due to the cavitation.



This is another shot showing the cavitation and how far away the impellor is away from the body.



This is the end result, if left for too many years... and much to my surprise, this motor didn't overheat. Only a std. 998, but still, amazing it did'nt get hot.

Those pressed tin pieces of rubbish last a dog watch and are made of warm butter! Lots of signs of dissimilar metal corrosion there...almost need to strap a sacrificial anode to the motor just to allow the water pump to live longer. Be like a high velocity water blaster in there...

The genuine iron impeller water pumps are the ones I always get...I think there are a few of these cheapest in the local supercrap auto shops...powermax or something...in a green box...

For those keen to use the original cast iron pump you may want to know MKO recondition them. Other parts places may also do this.

Great info GR. Cheap stuff is not worth buying, you get what you pay for, like everything in life.

Those MKO ones look like the ducks nuts, and I see you can either plug off the by-pass hose or install the fitting for one.

i have heaps n heaps of the old cast iron pumps 2nd hand if anyone needs them

I have refused to carry the pressed metal impeller type water pump for years.

all new water pumps I sell have the solid impeller fitted.

one of the interesting things about the pressed metal impeller pump is
the impeller is zinc plated offering a form of sacrificial corrosion, then the when the zinc
is removed it helps form a electrolytic conductor, and whilst present will react with the aluminium
body
