One of these plates pop riveted in 2 places ( and mirror image to each other) behind each side of the grill panel. Never seen them before. Any ideas ?

I've never seen them on another Cooper S (owned 2 Mk2's & a Mk1). As I said, they are identical both sides and the rivets are in the same place and they are in the same position each side. Same holes at the bottom and V .
Co-incidental ?
I can't think of a use for them. I just thought I would check before I binned them and filled the holes. I can take more pictures if anyone is interested. They are on my barn find 3/70 Mk2 S, found in 1983 and was unmolested except for the engine.

Are there any other holes in that area shouldn't be there?

If it was a rally car I would say its a support brace for front mudflaps.

Nope, no cage holes or sump guard holes for mounts. I'll take a picture of the grill area and inside the other wheel well.

mirror image of each other and perfectly lined up holes should indicate that the plates were mass produced - if something hung down between them???

To me they look like the early Oz hydro channel protection plates, just fixed in a different position and used for a different purpose.

Purpose ?? Can't see what they could be used for or why they are there. I will drill the rivets out and see whats underneath.

Interesting what these brackets could be for...

I just went and checked my 7/70 Mk2 S I'm restoring and have what looks to be the same holes that you have but minus the unknown brackets.

Could they maybe be used for a grill support to give more bitting surface for the pop rivet to bite into??

or

Since there are two identical brackets either side, Maybe there used to mount a rope/strap which wraps over the front of the grill attaching to the bonnet latch to hold down the bonnet for racing purposes as seen in many pics of coopers racing? Just a thought...

Certainly looks the same holes. I have drilled out the rivets and removed. I will post some pics later tonight. Black paint appears to be under them on the body, they are same colour as the car. I appears they were riveted to the body and the car then painted.

1. Reinforcing plate for quick-release grill fixtures without the tell-tale buttons?
2. Mounting plates for driving light brackets that slot through the grill?

I meant to check my car last night, as I have a bunch of unused holes in my grille panel - could easily be the same.

The strap on the front of that race car appears to be hooked on to the nerf bars

Weird...maybe the bottom mounts for a behind-the-grill winter blind?

Chin spoiler?
