Post subject:  What stops the wipers from not stopping?
The wipers on my 1275 LS have a mind of their own! When they have been on for a little while, when ya turn em off, they keep going. To get them to stop ya gotta flick the switch at the absulute perfect time (i'm talking within mm of precision!). It's not the switch, I replaced the switch with a spare I had (which I pulled down and cleaned, it's like new now). What's the problem?

There's a park switch thingy inside the wiper motor. Probably stuffed... :cry:

They easy to get in and out (not taking the wiper motor out)? Cheap to replace new? I spose these things arent things you replace with second hand ones?

Scott, it's been 20 years since I did one. I took the motor out. can't remember the rest. :lol:

Easy - 2 screws to get at it

Problem - it is on the underside of the motor - so has to come out to get at the screws

what about the connections to your switch in the cabin? There are 5 wires. Put them on the wrong terminals and you get this kind of problem. How do I know?? Because I did that :oops:

Changed them around and it's all good now.

yeah mate, isnt that that gold thing that is where i said mine is? or is there more motors at the base of each wiper arm? i though maybe it was driven by the gold thing somehow?

at leat it used to gold-coloured... :lol: :roll:

did the same thing JAM.... ur not alone.. its a pain in the ass!


Poeee... make sure one of the wires hasnt just fallen off the switch in the cabin!!

The park mechanism for the wipers is inside this thing but the bit Poeee needs to get at is on the under side of it.

This motor drives the wheel boxes via a threaded cable which turns cogs in the wheel boxes to create the rotoation of the wiper blades. There is only the one motor in this system

The park mechanism utilises both the plastic wheel inside the motor assembly (it could really be considered as the wiper gearbox couldnt it?) and the flick switch itself which acts ar a relay. There are two metal paths on the wheel: One is a continuous one over the circumference and it powers the normal wiping mechanism, the other is an interrupted one with a blank plate for park. So to wipe theres a contact between the slow or fast brush and the continuous wheel, for the parking function there,s a contact between the slow brush and the interrupted wheel. To park the contact with the continuous wheel is killed and the contact with the interrupted wheel will keep the closed circuit with the slow brush and the wheel turning and wipers moving until it reaches the blank section on the wheel strip = park. Until the continuous strip is not live again the wipers remain in an open circuit = stationary.

Sorry, sounds confusing but its a pain in the arse system. It could be that the wipers move so fast that they just skip the interrupted section and the wheel keeps spining, or that theres a bridge between the continuous and the interrupted wheel. In any case its probably down to corrosion. To get to the wheel you'll have to unscrew the motor from behind the dash, remove top cover, unscrew the big nut that attaches the wiper gear, withdraw the motor and the long gear, undo the circlip on the back of the motor and withdraw the wheel + disconnect the gear. In any case I struggled with it all rebuilding a single decently working motor from 3 old ones + modifying it so that it get stuck. But in the long run just get an MK4+ uk motor. I got one off Ebay for $25 and its a slightly better unit, + corosion free and works a treat.

Thanks for that, Mike. It almost makes sense without seeing one in parts!

When i've got time, i'll pull it off and strip it down, see what the problem is. 8)
