Post subject:  Pins in gear lever removal

Hey,
Is there any trick to removing the spring pins that connect the gear rod to the
engine's one? I've tried pulling it out, pushing it out, hitting it out, drilling it out and so far have has no luck. Is it tapered at all and I'm trying to get it out the wrong way, or is it just unbelievably tight in there?
Thanks.

They generally have to be hammered out with an appropriately sized punch. They are a tight fit but removeable. What can happen though if you use too sharp a punch, is that you may be flattening the head of the pin so that it won't pass through. In that case, drilling out may be the only option.

I just spent a few days on this last week, was hell till I figured it out with some help from the guys here.

Get a 3/16th flat pin punch and bfh and go for the one closest to the engine bay while it's in reverse. I sort of slid under on my side towards the drivers side wheel and bashed away till it came out. I found the one closer to the change assembly too hard to take out unless it was removed from the car and done on a bench.

Don't do what i did and initially use a 3/16 crayon shape punch, splitting the pin made it a nightmare to get out.

Hi Harley,

Like Shard sez, put it in reverse and bash out that pin - if you don't have a 3/16flat punch, use a 3/16 drill. Put the flat end against the pin and FBH the pointy end. Trust me, it will come out, after all, it went in  Good luck and no swearing or bashed knuckles are allowed.

Cheers
