I'd be keen to hear your guys opinions.

Would you leave floor interior vinyl in place whilst working on the floor metal and rust (see picture) ?

How much of a mongrel is it to reinstall nicely if it were removed ?

Have you had experience with this ?

Reason being I'm 'trying' a sympathetic rebuild and resisting the urge to pull everything out.

With the deluxe it's really the exterior and motor that need attention , the interior is pretty original and functional .

Really, to do a proper resto, the interior needs to come out and be cleaned. Floors appear they need cutting out and welding new panels in. Can't do that with so much vinyl around, they will be buggered if you do.
Mine was the same, perhaps worse. Remove with great care, don't force anything unecessarily, it will come out though. You have a little gem there, treat it with care. Vinyl is so retro. Good luck.

Your absolutely right MC4 , a little bit extra work goes a long way .
Yes the vinyl is a winner , just storing it now. Don't think I can save save the rear floor vinyl though ...

The Holden crowd have reproduction vinyl mats available. If only someone would do the same for the mighty Mini. :?

I think Grant Welsh was looking into the 850 style rubber mats (inc boot). I wonder how hard it would be to get the coloured vinyl done to the same specs?

Hi here is my tip for cleaning the interior trims - I have just reinstalled the original trims into my 1964 850 and I relied on two products. First, a couple of 100gm tubes of contact adhesive to carefully reglue all of the edges of the dash, parcel shelf, rear quarter panel and companion box liner trims. It is tedious, but I worked around the edge of each trim gluing and clamping with timber and g clamps or an assortment of bulldog clips. This helps to get the vinyl to stretch tight so it doesn't look saggy when back in position. Warming the vinyl in the sun or with a hair dryer helps too.
My other tip is good old cheap sugar soap, diluted in hot water, and scrub with a nail brush or other nylon scrubbing brush. Trust me, it works wonders!

You will need a lot of luck to find original vinyl in good condition, even any condition. But this may help. Check out All Car Carpets in Montrose Victoria. They do moulded vinyl for the mini in brown, black or grey. Not quite the deluxe style, more like 850 style. You could paint the grey to blue reasonably easy. They can also supply vinyl in a roll to do the other vinyl cladded areas. When you get on their website, don't sign in, just toggle down, click in Leyland, not Morris. Don't know if it's crap vinyl though, anyone else on here tried it out ?
