Would anyone in the central coast area have a spare generator I could borrow or even buy.

Came up to the Hunter All British show today. On the way back at Tuggarah ign light came on and it seems the generator is not putting out any charge. Tested with multi meter 0 volts across terminals when running.

I managed to get to a mates house at Kincumber and can stay the night.

If someone has one I may be able to pick it up tonight or tomorrow to get me home and I can either buy it or return later.

Post or PM if u think u can help out.

Cheers

Phill

If you're not going home till tomorrow you could put battery on charge over night, you'll get 2-3 hours driving in daylight. I have charger if that helps.

Yeah thanks that's a plan B. Tonight I'm going to have a closer look and do some proper testing. I'm assuming the generator as it was noisy, but it could be the regulator also.

I was wondering how far I might get on a fully charged battery in daylight...

Maybe the bearings crapped it?

Can someone just confirm I'm testing the generator correctly cause I'm going by memory.

I disconnect both wires from the generator and run a wire between the output and field terminals on the generator, run the motor, and I should get voltage between the bridged terminals and earth. Is that correct?

From memory D and F together you will get 20 - 30 volts depending on rpms. D will only have about 1.5 - 2 volts if not connected to F.

Thanks that's what I thought. I'll do a proper test a bit later tonight but pretty sure it's the generator.

The last time i checked the dynamo output on a car i took the F and D terminals off the regulator and tested it from there. This also confirms the wiring is good.

With the dynamo still on the car you may be able to see the length of the brushes and the condition of the commutator. Here is a photo i just took of mine. Image

If you recently gave the rear bearing a squirt of oil it may have come through and oiled these surfaces as well. Thats what happens to me after every service.

Mine still has the larger S pulley as well and if i drop the idle under 900rpm the red light starts to glow. I might even change the pulley to a std one and keep the S pulley with the car.

Tested the generator and no output. Once off I can see the brushes are totally worn and the springs have bottomed out.

Someone locally has offered a generator which I will be able to get tomorrow and fit. I'm also giving the battery a charge so worse case scenario I could prob get home on a fully charged battery.

Thanks for the offers of help and I'll keep those in mind as I head home. Cheers
