Post subject:  inlet manifold - carb angle change

I have a HIF44 manifold, and I need to change the angle so the air cleaner has a bit more room - it's poking through the speedo hole right now, a little more angle would fix it

do people normally machine the carb mounting face and plug/redrill the stud holes, or machine the manifold mounting face (both sides) and use stepped washers?

I'd machine the head side face, if the flange is thick enough you could machine the nut side as well to avoid using the stepped washers? Are you sure it's not a Midget/sprite manifold? The other reason to avoid doing this is that the float chamber angles will be wrong.

This is what is fitted to mine. Will that solve your problem?

thanks guys, but no - stepped washers are needed to fix the difference in thickness between the inlet and exhaust manifold flanges, and I prefer the paper filter I'm using

I just modified one of GR's RE7 SU manifolds for an ausmini member by machining its manifold to head flanges.
Original angle was 15deg, not sure if this one was made for an HS6 or HIF44. Neither carb fitted in a Deluxe without some firewall cutting. The owner does want to run a filter...
it is now 17.5deg to carb flange.
These head flanges were about 9.5mm thick, they are now 8mm. Same as my Maniflow LCB measures.

beauty - thanks Kev - I dug through old threads about machining them, but didn't find any reference to which face to machine... I also found where you said that GR found out that the maximum angle for a HIF44 is 18°, the angle now is 17°, so I might be out of luck anyway
