I'm interested in buying a Clubman GT and I would like to ask a few questions if I may.

The particular car I am looking at is a 1976 Clubman GT. I tried to find out what Redbook thought a 76 GT was worth and it didn't have a listing for that year. They listed Clubman GT's as being made only in earlier years. Is this correct? Could this one for sale be a replica or is there a discrepancy in Redbooks listings?

Also, assuming the car is in good condition what is the actual price you'd expect to pay for one these days?

I'm 23 and am sick of the rate of depreciation my cars are attracting... I've decided to ditch my money hungry Cressida and buy a classic that may hold some value. At hillclimbs I've always been attracted to the minis and so I figure they would be a good car for me.

Any other advice you guys could offer would also be appreciated.

Oh, this is a couple of pics of the car I'm looking at... is the owner on this forum? Are they the original GT decals?

admittedly one of my first reasons to look at an old car was appreciation
and the only old car id wanna be seen in was a mini :lol:

you will be waiting for a guy called Chris (Czerial) to come online, he knows much about the clubbies

1. redbook says all minis are worth $1900. big non-classic-car insurance companies go by this value as well. we all know this isnt true, and some places will ask you how much your mini is worth to you.
Shannons or GIO Veterens can range from $5000 to $30,000
so dont worry about redbook

2. my impression is that the GTs were kinda like a later rather than early thing.
they'd come out with the simple models (like leyland 998cc, morris 850cc) and seeing the popularity, go flashy (leyland GT, SS, morris coopers)

i dont know my clubmans but i know that GTs are rare and hard to come by in original condition

you'd have to tell us the body number and engine number and thats a start to whether its a GT or not. judging by pictures, the interior looks quite changed and altered so that may be a price-reduction argument.

Hi,

The Clubman GT (Aus model) was only produced and sold 1972 -73 - the UK 1275GT lasted until about 1980ish. It was a replacement for the Mk II Cooper S when production of that car ceased. Roughly 1000 of them were made and a fair number were shipped here to NZ where they were a v good seller. Numbers unknown, but a contact here in the mag trade reckons half of them came here - they are now v hard to find in either country.

They were not produced in 1976 - you are looking at a replica. check the ID plate in the engine bay - model code for the GT is YG2S8 with 3 or 4 numbers following.

The early cars (exact number unknown) had the genuine Cooper S block with an engine number begiining 1200/XXXX. The later cars used an 1100S block with engine number 1206/XXXX.

Price wise, they are certainly worth more than $1900! They would be starting to fetch up to $10k probably - there is one for sale here atm with an asking price of $15k. Try and track down Bob Ward from MOCQ - he has one and can probably help.

They are not the original decals on this car. Have a look at my web site - it might give you a few tips and there is a copy of a very good article by Stephen Dalton about identifiying GT's.

Bob Ward bought my Dad's Cadiz Clubman GT last year. All sorts of claims are now being made about that car, police car, special dry suspension, sway bar etc etc Oh well whatever.

The last production Clubman GT was made in December 1972 but these were sold up to May (?) 1973.
The pictures of the GT stripes aren't Clubman GT stripes. Remember GT stripes on the Clubman GT were a delete option too.

Whereabouts is that car located? There is a car like that for sale in Sunbury, or at least it used to live here and I saw it a couple of weeks ago on the side of the road for sale.

I guess he could have just been visiting.

They aren't the correct stripes for a Aussie GT.

They are the UK stripes.

I used to own a Cadiz orange GT but unfortunately had to sell for financial reasons (mutant again).

I agree, i waiting for someone to say that it couldnt be a GT
they didnt make them in 1976. so someone is tugging your chain
id say.

and yep the GT stipes were an option. but the whole car is so unoriginal
and is from everything i have heared not a genuine gt. could very
possibly be a reshell, but seing as how the interior is wrong as are wheels
etc.....id say if you want a clubby thats is a nice one. but a gt it aint.

Thanks for the replies guys... I am waiting to hear back from the seller so I can go take a look at it.

If it has all the GT specs i wonder if it is a problem that it's not genuine? It will never be worth as much but I suppose that just means I pretty much get a GT but don't have to pay for one. :D

I noticed that it has the twin fuel caps... the boot isn't open in any of the pics so I can't tell if the second one is just a fake but was it only GT's and Coopers that had twin tanks or were there other models?

mutant mini - yes it is for sale in Sunbury. When trolling through the forums last night I noticed your location and was close to sending you a PM to see if you knew of this particular car. Seems like you have seen it before.

If they are the UK stripes, perhaps it is a late model GT private import.

Seen it as it lived in the same street.

The young guy that lived in this street moved and sold it and the seller is selling it again.

Ok, I know it is curently owned by a young guy. I've spoken to his Dad on the phone. Apparently they've only had it for 18months and have had the engine rebuilt in that time. They're asking $5500 which I thought was reasonable but now that I know it's not a GT that's probably a bit much isn't it?

no mate for that price, with all gt running gear etc 5.5 is very reasonable IMO

I don't know about my expertise, but it may be better than nothing.

I guess the price depends on what it has actually got that's extra than a normal clubman.

Does it have Cooper S discs, or any discs at all? GT gauge cluster with GT tacho?

I think you mentioned twin tanks.

Well... I see two filler caps, it doesn't means there's two tanks... If the owner put checkerplate in the footwells I wouldn't put it past him to fit a second fuel cap just for looks. :wink:

Any mini knowledge is more knowledge than me... I know a lot about Cressidas now that I have owned one for three years. I have many friends in the Cressida club with whom we share information about factory specs and possible modifications. I would imagine it is the same for mini owners to develop knowledge/expertise..

Check speedo - should go to 120mph and the tacho red lines at 6500rpm (only clubman model to do so).

The stripes are not UK or NZ GT stripes. They have been 'made to own design'.

if that $5500 is registered, or with a safety cert, it would be a good buy from how it looks here. imo anyway.
