Post subject: | Made mini work now, |
Okkher, so today about 5 seconds after i got home from work, i had the mini's bonnet open, and i began hacking away at it. Im not quite sure why or what i was looking for? But i just did it. Forever in my owning existance of mini, it has never idled properly. The bloke who sold it to me, said, it doesnt run/idle properly, Its way too high, and he had a fair bit of mech knowledge, he couldnt fix it. A mechanic i took it to, he also couldnt figure out why it does idle so high/ run too rich? whatever. At work on Monday when i took it, Going home, the choke cable got stuck as it sometimes do, and it wouldnt go back in, so i was sitting there running with the choke all out for a long time, trying to get it back in, from in the cabin. So bloke i work with, he knows nothing about a mini, but he had a fiddle, and he make it go back in, fiddling with something on carby. But he says when i take off, it blows real rich black soot/smoke, and it runs extra too rich, But no one can fix it, not cables or screws can really alter it, to anything that sounds/smells right. The mini will not idle for more than 5 seconds without me tapping the accelerator, be in after 2 minutes after start up, a 20min drive, an hour drive, or a 2 hour drive, It doesnt idle at all. Anyways that the problem, so i had a fiddle. Looking at bits off my old wreck Right so here is the carby attatch manifold thing off the wrecked clubman. It has 2 tupe things as you can see. ![]() More about this cars setup, here are these things off it, and here ![]() ![]() is the 2" pipe thing that starts at the join of the above 3 tubes. Mine is only 1.25". ![]() Now This is my carby now. ![]() this is this part of it, the same part as the other part of the wrecked one. Mine has 3 tubes there, as you can see. ![]() That middle one is not part of the exhaust pipe system as far as i know, but the other one only had 2 tubes. Mine also has that big bolt in there, and a small rubbery lenght of tube with a screw in the top of it where my finger is. The other piece didnt have any of these. So i didnt know what i was fiddling with, but i yanked off the carby (id done that before), but i undid that big bolt on my manifold, it was sealed in with some rubbery red sticky sealant of sorts, So obviously i cracked through it and undid the bolt.? But then i decided Okkher so ill have ago at pulling the little carby manifold off also, So i undid 4 bolts that 3 are visible in the picture, but i thought id then be able to yank it off. But it doesnt come off? Is it welded on or something? Its not moving. But the other bit come off the other mini without much force? Actually i remembered i was going to get a fatter carby on. I have seen a bigger one of Austin Kimberly, and some stupid geeky name (cheers simon) explained to me 'porting' and how i would whack on a bigger carby on my 1.5" manifold thing! But then he said that because i dont have extractors it prolly will be too hard/not worth it. But then he said go and have a fiddle, So a fiddle i did. But with a different carby on, id be able to see if it is infact the carby at fault, not something else, So it all fun and games. The bloke at work said he thought it wasnt a problem with cables/screws or stuff, it was a more internal thing, and he said maybe you need a carby kit for it. He explained about one he had done of his V8 HQ, but i didnt take any notice. But a different carby might be fun, and can someone explain the differences in the car parts between the 2 clubmans. why does me have 3 tubes? not 2? why is there a bug chunky bolt there, but not on the other one? Does it all mean something, or am i just reading too much into an un-interesting subject? All i know is i had fun, unscrewing all screws and bolts that looked like they wanted to be turned, being an idiot. But i now have super filthy hands, Not too happy about that. All the grease and oil and fuel and other stuffs, got into my deep open stab wound that i inflicted on me at work, playing with old rusty barbed wire, so thats probably not a good prize. please explain to me, anything that which i have asked that is a problem or a question, Thankyou. And happy Birthday to me ^_^ |

It's probably the needle causing it to run rich. It's either the wrong one, or the one in there is worn. |

Outstanding post Camel....a lot of it is Mini related as well ![]() I would take the carby to a Mini expert or book the whole car into a mechanic who speaks British or knows Minis....it all looks fairly sad...so needs some TLC mate ![]() ![]() |

Hmm, I'd find a mate who knows minis to run through some stuff with you about car basics. I really don't mean to be condescending at all, but a little understanding will go a long way. Your old Clubman has a set of older style Cooper exhaust extractors, and a carb manifold which were fitted after the car was made. Your carb has the standard manifold, which is the thing the carb bolts to. This manifold (the big iron casting) also acts as the exhaust manifold. It's a cheap thing to make, but not so good for power, which is why people fit separate intake (carb) and exhaust manifolds - it allows the air to flow into and out of the engine easier and thus make more power. Your car probably doesn't need much more than a really good tune up and maybe some cheap parts replaced. But it does need someone who knows what they're doing. Have you thought about joining a local Mini club? If it's anything like the local one here, people are only too happy to help, and are good sources for parts and advice. And knowing about your car and how it works will put you on the road to fully understanding mechanics and maintenance. Which is part and parcel of owning a mini. You'll note that, by the number of questions on this forum, that everyone is still learning. |

Good im the 1st to know that i know nothing The only way to learn how to wreck things, is to get in there and hack at random bolts until something happens ![]() I had a good chat with 'skssgn' He explained a lot to me. As he said when i said i know nothing about mechanics, "well i know nothing about Namibia ![]() ![]() But, i know it needs a good attending to, the whole car. Im slowly getting bits and pieces done to it. He told me about the manifold types, and the extractors and the exhaust systems, and it was very very friendly and i much appreciate it ![]() So im going to have a go at stuff myself. Which some will say is alright, and others will say dont be so stupid. I will put a bigger carby on it, this Austin Kimberly 1.75", Simon says i wont need to do any 'porting' if i whack it on that inlet manifold that i am holding. The extractors/bigger exhaust, if they are all straight and good that is. But if they arent so good, then ill keep my current setup, as it has been running for 18 months ![]() Because it all works . all i get asked is "Gee, do you get your fuel cheap do you ![]() ![]() But skssgn was telling me just the most simple stuff, and i didnt know it, so i dont care how superior anyone else sounds - in relation to know how, cause "i know nothing" ![]() thanks for help peoples. ill see what happens |

![]() YAY ill remember that when it come in mid December ![]() So a 1.75" SU carby, off an old Holden, i presume they are all the same, 45 bucks from Wreckers, or the Kimberly carby, same size 55 bucks? I dunno maybe ill have a look, Ihve had more of a look just then, and how can i take off the exhaust system with nothing but my hands and spanners? I mean how can i get it off and put a new one on? I have car ramps, but maybe they arent useable yet. It all too stupid and annoying, But my manifold came off alright,i j ust cant get it out and away |

exhaust places dont usually charge a hell of alot to fit the exhaust to your car, with your carb running too rich, have you adjusted the big nut at the bottom of the carbie, has the dash pot got oil in it, is your manifold free of rust where fuel could be getting stranded?? or is your engine buggered?? could be many things, go see a mini specialist and ask them what they think? |

camel, some old guy pulled the the zorst off of some little guys skyline and put a bigger one on with it just sitting on blocks. im sure it would maybe be easier to do on ur mini. maybe you should bring it up one day and we will have a go like we did with the air horns. we could of used the shed but there is the skyline in there atm, then it is the pulsars turn, then some other stuff gets a go i think, so maybe we cant use that for a long time? |

People wrote: go see a mini specialist People wrote: join a mini car club Ok ok so i suppose some people are in the same situation, and even worse Right there is no mini specialist. virtually no one touches them anymore, REALLY ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There is no mini club. Well there is. That is also south the 7 hour return trip. Its not worth it, to do anything. Nothing matters, cause if i bugger anything, well i dont care, i can still get about, and i can put it all back where i found it ![]() ![]() Big bloke wrote: camel, some old guy pulled the the zorst off of some little guys skyline and put a bigger one on with it just sitting on blocks.
But the engine was a bit out? There is no room to pull anything through. And i was thinking yes id go to your home there one sat. real early, like at midday or something, and have a go, and then go super tuffer? But i dunno, see what happens again. ![]() And as if the mini doesnt get to go ahead of the skyline or the pulsar ![]() But thanks for the offer im sure something would happen |

camel i would think you have the standard exhaust on the car so you need to undo the clamp that hold the manifold to the zaust should be just above the diff thend you will be able to remove the inlet and ehaust manifolds with the larger carby you will need to use another type of exhaust out let (lcb 3 into 1) i think you have them on the wreak you have there then put it all on with a new manifold gasket makka |

NO there are no bloody mini specialists. THE end ok? i would get as much help from here as talking to people Makka? So there should be a joint to undo? I cant find one from the whole length of the pipe from the top of the manifolds/ From what i can see it is all one piece, and if it is i can do nothing else? Maybe a hack saw ![]() But i got it on some ramps and i couldnt be bothered putting it all together again, so i poulled it up with magna ![]() ![]() This was a bad idea It was muddy and wet ![]() and it absolutely cains the tyres ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() this was they after a while, unfortunately i didnt capture the smoke, but gee it was belting out some smoke ![]() ![]() so there it is and hopefully i can see a join to undo and drop it out i got the extractors off the old one, and thats good ![]() it has one of this? good. so ill have another go at things, and hopefully it can all come apart. But it will be fun i reckon |
