Post subject: | Speedwell/Smiths type tacho pod questions |
Hi, I recently came across this tacho pod. Can anyone tell me what make it is - eg Speedwell, or Smiths? It is very solid spun alloy, well made, with a hollow ball joint mounting to allow the wiring to pass through the centre. It is currently painted flat black but may have been black wrinkle/crackle finish originally. Also, it is missing the base of the ball joint mount. I think it should look like this: If anyone has the base part and wishes to sell, please contact me? cheers Matt |

It looks like a Speedwell type tacho pod. Mark Forster in the UK makes copies of them: http://mk1-performance-conversions.co.uk/pods.html |

That's a Smiths mounting pod. The Speedwell version is similar, maybe exactly the same, but I haven't compared them side by side. Speedwell may have just used the Smiths type or perhaps sourced from the same manufacturer. I think I have one or two also without the ball joint mounting socket, like the one you pictured. I guess it was too hard to remove the base when removing the tacho from a vehicle as I've seen others at swap meets without the base. Attachment: Smiths Tacho Brochure eBay.jpg Attachment: CCC.jpg

Hi Winnabbey, thanks - that is useful information. A bit depressing about the mounting bases. I wonder if the ones Mark Forster sells are compatible and whether he can provide the mountings separately. I might make some enquiries. Cheers Matt |

Marks (mounting brackets) don't have the hole that you would need if the wires were to be fitted as per your photo. His mounts bolt through a hole in the case where as yours appear to be welded on. Cheers, Ian |

Thanks all. 1071, the mounting in this Smiths pod is secured to the alloy housing with a nut over a thread on the inside of the housing. So, it could be removed and replaced with a solid mount potentially. It would be great to find the correct hollow base mount though - it must make for a very tidy installation with the wiring out of sight. |
