Has anyone tried to get a Mini painted recently. I am trying to get a feel for the cost which painters are currently quoting for an outside only respray on a semi finished body. |

The current quotes I am receiving, and I have three, are $4500 to $5000 which does not include the underside or inside including boot and engine bay which are already complete. The outside has had etch then high build primer applied then sanded with 400 grit in readiness for the colour. |

Always good to have ballpark figure when negotiating with the finance director for spare funds.

I have found this YouTube video quite useful for painting a car at home ,it goes through all the steps and sandpaper grades used in each .The results are a really professional look.It starts from bare metal .You will need the protective gear though to spray the urethane , or maybe use an epoxy sealer and acrylic instead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lw0ObOdWnRE |

Are the quotes for 2K, Acrylic or Baked Enamel? Personally I'm not a fan of 2K. Makes the car look plastic. |

The type of paint used did not make a great deal of difference to the overall cost - paint material costs were around $1000 for each option. |

The costs depend largely on the quality of finish you are requiring. So much of the final finish is in the prep work, so if you don't know what you are doing with respect to prep, you are better off spending the extra to have the whole job done. |

I am only speaking from the experience of painting one car, but I would say the prep is not difficult, just very time consuming and requires a good attention to detail. With enough patience and research I would say anyone could prep a car for paint pretty well. A few problems for the average joe when it comes to applying finish coats: -Not many people have a suitable compressor to deal with the volume of air required even for a basic HVLP gun -If you have got a reasonable compressor, you probably don't have a suitable moisture trap setup for painting -If you have both of the above, you probably don't have an ideal space for painting -If you haven't painted before, it can be very difficult to get the gun setup perfectly and apply the correct amount of paint (not too dry, not too thick) Although I ended up with a really nice finish there was a lot spent on the required hardware, wasted product and time wasted on correcting mistakes. If I were to do it all again, I would for sure prep the car at home myself and pay someone to do the shooting of the paint! |

I found some serious painters dont want prep or undercoats done before they have it, since the topcoat can only be as good as the prep and they cant tell everything just by looking at it. Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk |
