The cheapest, mass produced crap that they could find to ensure fulfilling bulk orders :!:

Century and Exide were fairly big in the day...

Ha, ha. :) It's great we can provide opinion and criticism as BMC/Leyland are no longer here to defend themselves. :|

I think I've seen mention of batteries fitted during production. Lucas and Dunlop brands come to mind. I'll see if I can find a reference.

My early 850 came with a Lucas.

Lucas.
You can sometimes still find warranty cards in the folder with the Passport To Service handbook.
The workshop manual will probably say which model battery (Lucas Alert 36**?).

Well done that man. :) We sometimes forget to look in the most obvious places.

The black workshop manual TP832C says Lucas 12BST 38 and 12BT48 for most Mini models, with Lucas Alert 3619 for the Clubman and Lucas Albert 3623 (I think they mean Alert) for the Cooper S and GT.

Another question along the same line. Did the cooper and cooper s come with the cardboard cover and elastic strap over the battery?

Phil B

The cardboard battery cover and Pirelli webbing strap was first fitted in Australia to the Morris 850.

So the the answer is yes.

The reason I ask is because I had heard that although the cardboard cover was fitted to other models of mini it was not fitted to the cooper and cooper s because unlike other models the boot board acted to sufficiently to protect the battery. Trying to work out if that is true or not.

Like you Phill I reckon the Cooper and Cooper S didn't use the cardboard cover as the boot board supplied a similar level of protection for the exposed battery terminals. Just chatting to John Smidt who agrees.

I tend to agree with PhillB and Winabbey that the fibre cover and strap were not used on Ss. My ex-police S didn't have one but that could easily have been discarded before I owned it. However, there was no hook on the earth strap bolt for the pirelli webbing to clip onto, which would have been less likely to be removed.

I have owned a quite a few Cooper and Cooper 'S' over the years and none had the cover fitted

According to the last of the round-nose Mini parts books (PUB1012) the cardboard cover (part 14A7020), rubber strap (14A7776) and clip (14A7780) were not used on the Australian assembled Cooper and Cooper S.
