Post subject:  Coil Suspension????

Finally got the 'Clubby on the road after buying it 3yrs ago and not driving one for about 18yrs. Obviously a different road feel to what I'm now used to and was thinking about converting the cones to coils with hi-los(already fitted). Whats peoples opinion/ recommendations for a strictly road going car, worth the effort or should I just consider changing the shocks? If shocks only what type? I do have a full SPAX coil over conversion sitting in the garage but that for another project

Cheers,

Andy

What cones and shocks do you have on the car now? If they are old and worn out even changing to new standard gear will make a huge difference.

How low is the suspension? If the front is close to the bumpstops it can make a very uncomfortable and unpredictable drive.

I bought a new set of cones (Minispares/M Parts brand) and KYB Gas-a-just shocks and raised the suspension back up near stock height. It's much better to drive now (actually seems better than my 6 year old Mazda).

I've been curious about the coils but never tried them myself. They don't have the same rising spring rate like the rubber cones do (which get stiffer as the cones compress) so they won't be as flexible with different weight in the car (passengers, luggage etc). You would also need to maintain a high enough ride height to get the full range of suspension travel and so they don't dislodge.
